Job Description
Position Summary:
- The CNC Machinist is responsible for setting up and operating a variety of CNC and conventional machines to produce high-precision components. This role involves interpreting blueprints and technical drawings, selecting tooling and fixtures, and ensuring parts meet exact specifications. The machinist will also fit and assemble machined parts into complete units, applying expertise in machining theory, material properties, and layout techniques. A successful CNC Machinist at KLH brings a strong attention to detail, solid problem-solving skills, and a commitment to quality and continuous improvement in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- 1st Shift: 7:00 am - 3:00 pm (5 days a week)
- 2nd Shift: 3:00 pm - 1:00 am (4 days a week)
Including the following, but not limited to:
- Operate CNC machines to produce precision components within tight tolerances (±0.0005”), using blueprints, sketches, and specifications to plan and execute machining operations.
- Set up machines, select and install tooling, calculate dimensions, speeds, and feeds, and adjust settings as needed to ensure accuracy and quality.
- Read and interpret blueprints, job orders, and specifications; determine machine sequences and program CNC machines (including writing, editing, downloading, and verifying programs).
- Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, saws, and grinders.
- Establish or adjust work procedures to meet production schedules, using knowledge of machine capacities and equipment.
- Inspect parts using precision measuring instruments to verify conformance to specifications; document inspection results and maintain production records.
- Accurately document machine settings, offsets used, and detailed descriptions of work performed for each setup and shift to support traceability and repeatability.
- Maintain time and production records in accordance with company standards.
- Troubleshoot machining and tooling issues; recommend and support process improvements to enhance quality, efficiency, and throughput.
- Collaborate with engineers, supervisors, and team members to coordinate projects and resolve technical or quality concerns.
- Assist in training new employees and support continuous improvement and Lean manufacturing initiatives.
- Maintain equipment and a clean, organized work area; perform routine maintenance as needed.
Experience & Education:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational or technical training in machining preferred.
- Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience as a CNC machinist, with a preferred emphasis on 5-axis machining.
- Effective communication and collaboration in a team environment, with the ability to work independently and take ownership of tasks
- Familiarity with a variety of material types (e.g., aluminum, steel, titanium)
- Proficient in the use of precision measuring instruments (e.g., calipers, micrometers, height gauges)
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
- Basic understanding of machine maintenance and troubleshooting
- Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) preferred
- Proficiency in shop math, including algebra and trigonometry; ability to compute and apply formulas, fractions, decimals, and whole numbers
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, technical manuals, operating procedures, and engineering documentation
- Minimum basic computer skills, including Microsoft Windows, Word, Outlook, Excel, and preferred experience with JobBOSS (or similar ERP systems)
