KVH is offering a $2,000.00 sign-on bonus which will be included in first paycheck following date of hire.

GENERAL SUMMARY:

 

The Medical Assistant II meets the following requirements in addition to those in the Medical Assistant I job description.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES (per RCW 18.360.050 [1]):

  • Performs aseptic procedures and assists with sterile procedures.

  • Capillary blood withdrawal and intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular injections of medication.

  • Electrocardiography.

Medical Assistant I job description:

The Medical Assistant I (MA) performs direct patient care activities under the direction of a licensed provider in the Family Medicine (FM) clinic within his/her scope of practice (RCW 18.360.050). The MA I supports the provider, nurse, or other staff with the daily coordination of patient care and patient access by organizing patient flow, collecting patient information, entering all patient information and clinical data in the electronic medical record (EMR), communicating key information with the physician/provider, anticipating and acting on patient needs proactively. The MA I demonstrates excellence in customer service during interactions with employees, managers/supervisors, patients, patient family members, physicians, and other customers and works collaboratively with colleagues and departments throughout the organization to provide optimal patient outcomes. Maintains a safe, clean, and organized work environment.

These Qualifications are in addition to the MAII qualification

Minimum Education, Training & Experience (includes licenses or certifications):

Safety Sensitive per WA SB5123: No

Education / Licensure:

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current Washington State Medical Assistant certification (Certified) required.

  • National Certification from one of the below is required.

    • Certified MA exam through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AMAA)

    • Registered MA certification examination through the American Medical Technologists (AMT)

    • Clinical MA certification examination through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA)

    • National certified MA examination through the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)

    • Clinical MA Certification Examination through the American Medical Certification Association (AMCA)

  • High school diploma or GED required. 

  • BLS required.

  • Basic computer knowledge required (Word, Excel, Internet, EMR).

Experience:

  • At least one (1) year of recent experience providing direct patient care in an outpatient or acute care medical setting is preferred.

 

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of basic medical assisting skills (i.e., taking vital signs, administering vaccines and medications, recognizing abnormal signs and symptoms, etc.); first aid; patients’ rights; universal precautions; infection control; body mechanics; basic medical terminology.

  • Ability to anticipate tasks and prioritize assignments.  Must be self-motivated and take initiative without regular supervision.

  • Requires critical thinking skills and decisive judgment. 

  • Demonstrate positive interpersonal and communication skills with colleagues, patients, families and providers, particularly during times of high stress. 

  • Follow oral and written instructions precisely. 

  • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills.

  • Familiarity with basic medical terminology and medication trade and generic names.

  • Keen attention to detail and high degree of accuracy; risk of error could result in significant harm or loss.

  • Ability to deliver excellent customer service to internal (patients and staff) and external customers (visitors and vendors) and work effectively with distraught or agitated individuals. 

  • Work productively and cohesively within a team and positively resolve conflict.

  • Adaptability is essential to manage the needs of a department with unpredictable volume and resources.

  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English

  • Must be able to communicate using proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling 

  • Experience with using everyday computer electronic technology tools (e.g., email, data retrieval, voicemail, and internet/intranet) as well as ability to effectively utilize and enter information in the electronic medical record (EMR). Plus copier and fax proficiency. 

  • Proficiency with basic computer programs including Microsoft Word and Excel, and have good typing skills.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / RESPONSIBILITIES (but not limited to):

  • Obtains vital signs and accurately records patient’s chief complaint, symptoms, history, allergies, and immunizations in the medical chart or electronic medical record (EMR).

  • Collects specimens as instructed by the physician/provider.

  • Prepares patients for examination by the physician/provider and supports, as needed, in examining the patient (e.g., holding the child for injection, turning the patient, hand instruments to the provider, etc.).

  • Obtains prepares and sets up supplies and instruments to be used in the care and treatment of patients.

  • Administers injections/vaccines, medications; seeks clarification of unclear verbal or written orders, reports all drug errors or near misses as appropriate, consults with physician/provider when seeking additional information.

  • Processes prescription refills under the direction of the provider and per clinic policy.

  • Tracks and routes diagnostic test results to the provider(s) for review and communicates test results to the patient when deemed appropriate by physician/provider.

  • Reports abnormal values, significant deviations, or key information to physician/provider promptly.  

  • Performs waived testing as allowable by CLIA (e.g., urine dip, blood sugar, rapid strep).  

  • Enters all required patient information and clinical data in the electronic medical record (EMR) system to maintain the paperless charting system of the clinic. 

  • Uses the principles of growth and development to assess each patient’s age-specific needs and provides age-specific treatment and care.

  • Maintains a clean, well-stocked, safe environment for patients and staff; keeps patient care and utility areas neat and clean. 

  • Answers phone, takes messages, assists physician/provider or other staff as needed.

  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, safety, environmental, and infection prevention standards.

  • Participates in departmental and organizational quality management activities.

  • Cooperates with other personnel to achieve department objectives and maintain good employee relations, interdepartmental objectives, and infection control policies.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
