Job Position: Field Services Engineer
Purpose: As a Field Services Engineer at Knobelsdorff, you will be responsible for the testing, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems within renewable energy, industrial, and commercial installations. This position includes and integrity of our electrical systems. This position requires up to 60-70% of travel time.
Responsibilities
- Travel to customer sites for inspection, testing, troubleshooting, start-up, and data collection on electrical systems (480V to 765kV).
- Perform testing on power transformers (e.g., Doble TTR, Insulation Resistance) and collect transformer oil samples.
- Test electro-mechanical and solid-state relays, cables (e.g., Tan Delta, Partial Discharge, VLF, DC Hipot), switchgear, and circuit breakers.
- Read and interpret schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Troubleshoot and repair circuit breaker controls.
- Follow NETA ATS/MTS specifications and guidelines.
- Train apprentices and team members.
- Manage project files, drawings, documents, and records.
- Provide excellent customer service and communication.
- Be available for occasional evening, weekend, and holiday work, as well as emergency outages.
- Work on out-of-town projects as needed.
- Conduct hands-on execution of projects, including start-up, commissioning, troubleshooting, engineering design, and repair of power delivery and generator equipment.
- Handle power delivery systems such as transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, busways, UPS, ATS, PLCs, protective relays, and power management control systems.
- Troubleshoot and operate programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
- Install, troubleshoot, and design switchgear, ATS, circuit breakers, and generator system controls.
- Inspect, test, and repair power control systems and distribution switchboards.
- Provide customer technical support and training.
- Prepare and maintain detailed design documents, reports, checklists, and electrical drawings.
- Ensure compliance with safety policies, procedures, guidelines, and laws (OSHA and NFPA 70E).
Qualifications
- At least 5 years of relevant experience in switchgear testing and troubleshooting.
- NETA or NICET certification preferred.
- Knowledge of electrical and/or photovoltaic (solar) construction.
- Experience with PLCs, HMIs, and programming.
- Familiarity with power distribution, AC/DC voltage, circuit theory, and practical troubleshooting.
- Experience with diesel power generation controls.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and electrical drawings.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and diagnostic software.
- Good critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Valid driver's license with a safe driving history.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
- Physical ability to lift up to 80 lbs. and work in various environmental conditions.
- OSHA 30-hour, MSHA, NFPA 70-E, CPR/First Aid/BBP/AED training preferred (training provided by Knobelsdorff if needed).
- Willingness to travel up to 60-70% of the time locally/regionally with overnight stays.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to sit, stand, kneel, stoop, walk, and sit for long periods of time.
- Must be capable of working in inclement conditions to include extreme hot and cold temperatures.
- Must be physically capable of lifting and carrying up to 75 lbs.
