Position is responsible for timely completion of daily assigned commercial voice, video, and data installations. Additionally, the Commercial Technician may assist with building entry construction for industrial, institutional, and MDU applications.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to those listed below:

  • Ensures timely completion of daily assigned installations – calls in completion status in a timely manner
  • Performs aerial and underground commercial, industrial, institutional, and MDU cable, data, & telephony installations following WOW! specifications and industry practices
  • Complies with OSHA, NESC, and WOW! safety regulations and precautions when completing assigned work
  • Performs commercial disconnects and non-pay disconnects and makes every reasonable effort to retrieve customer premise equipment where applicable
  • Maintains and tracks flow of customer premise equipment necessary to perform daily work assignments
  • Completes installation and configuration of commercial CPE ensuring customer education and satisfaction of services installed
  • Installs NIC cards and drivers for cable modems including the ability to update files if needed to properly configure a customer’s computer for modem service
  • Installs various EMTA’s, verifies tip & ring, completes proper punch down of copper telco cables
  • Understands various demark configurations for Commercial installs and the transition between our demark and the customer’s PBX and phone equipment
  • Has a general understanding of commercial phone systems and the vendors that service them, such that they are able to provide guidance/advise for customers having problems with their phone system
  • Competes Plant Test Date verifications for coordinated LNP cuts, ensures proper number assignments for hunt group configurations, and verifies all features
  • Trouble-shoots service affecting problems at the service drop level
  • Promotes WOW! services and seeks sales & upgrade opportunities as opportunities arise
  • Special projects as may be assigned by the Supervisor
  • Communication to customers must be grammatically correct, must be professional, positive, and consistent with company expectations.
  • Coordinates with other WOW! technical departments
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • 3 years of CATV/telco installation experience with commercial applications
  • Strong knowledge of wall fishing and commercial construction practices
  • Troubleshooting techniques a plus
  • Excellent written, oral communications skills
  • Must be detail oriented and a well-organized individual
  • Must be self-motivated with a strong work ethic and professional attitude
  • Able to present technical information to a non-technical audience
  • Able to work independently
  • Able to accurately measure distances using tapes and other measuring devices
  • Able to use assigned test equipment including but not limited to signal level meter (SLM), leakage detector, volt OHM meter, sweep receiver, underground locator and TDR
  • Able to accurately maintain records, logs, reports, work orders, etc.
  • Able to operate office equipment, fax, copier, etc.
  • Able to handle escalations and time-critical issues
  • Able to read street maps

Education/Experience:

Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent. One to two years of technical experience in the broadband and telephony communication field preferred.

Computer Skills:

MSOffice software skills are preferred; Internet and email are required; able to install, set up and configure personal computers with a variety of operating systems

  • Ability to work while standing most of the time

  • Ability to carry, climb and operate extension ladder (approx. 28’ & 75lbs)
  • Ability to differentiate between different sizes and colors of wires and cables
  • Ability to perform work in elevated places (i.e., roofs and utility poles)
  • Ability to use drills, hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers and other hand tools
  • Ability to work with small components
  • Ability to use close vision, peripheral vision and adjust focus
  • Ability to work in poorly vented areas such as attics, in extreme temperatures
  • Ability to move, crawl, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, pull, push, and grasp
  • Ability to lift up to 90 pounds
  • Ability to work in environments that may contain dust, dirt, noise, insects and cleaning solutions
  • Ability to work safely near power lines and electrical equipment
  • Ability to drive Company vehicles in a safe manner
  • Must be able to meet the physical limit requirements of personal protective equipment, aerial lift equipment, ladders and/or gaffs that may be used in this position
  • Must be able to climb poles/ladders and work from elevated heights
  • Able to work flexible hours as required, including evenings, weekends and on-call shifts.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain a driving record that meets the Company’s insurance carrier’s requirements
