Machine Operator (Grade 5)
Tends and operates cannery machines including, but not limited to, aseptic product packagers, automatic can casers, automatic palletizers, Baader-Cooker combination, empty can depalletizer, filler cappers, filler closing machines, glass packers (attendant), juice presses, label machines (attendant), manual can casers, mechanical depalletizers, mechanical palletizers, Number 10 brite stackers, six pack machines, syruper/closing machines, Pease peelers, and vacuum tanks. Operates one or more machines at a time. Observes operation to detect any malfunctions and reports malfunctions to supervisor and/or mechanic. Feeds product or raw materials and supplies into machine. Monitors product condition, for Food Safety and Quality as required. Removes improperly processed or damaged product from production line. Verifies accuracy and enters product codes, as required. Changes time codes on an hourly basis. Records information, such as weight, and number of products produced, as required. Keeps work area clean and orderly.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

1. Tends and operates cannery machines. Operates one or more machines at a time. Communicates with other machine operators to maintain continuous flow on production line. Makes minor line changes.
2. Starts and stops machine and observes operation to detect any malfunctions. Reports malfunctions to supervisor and/or mechanic.
3. Verifies use of correct supplies, including cartons, cans, lids, labels, etc., against production schedule. Checks supplies for damages, such as dented cans. Reports any concerns or signs of product tampering to the Supervisor immediately.
4. Verifies accuracy and enters product codes as required. Changes time codes on an hourly basis.
5. Feeds product, raw materials, and or supplies into machine by hand, or by conveyor, hopper, and other feeding devices. Monitors product temperature to ensure standards achieved, as required. Replenishes machine supplies during operation.
6. Makes minor adjustments and repairs, such as adjusting filler weights, cleaning machine, and clearing away damaged product.
7. Records information, such as number of products produced or number of damage items, as required. Tracks and explains downtime. Completes appropriate reports and paperwork.
8. Inspects processed product. Checks to ensure accurate product coding. Removes improperly processed or damaged product from production line.
9. Removes samples from line for testing.
10. Keeps work area clean and orderly.
11. Reports any Food Safety, Food Quality Issues to Supervisor immediately.
ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES:
· Barrels off or reprocesses product, as required.
ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, AND SAFETY GEAR:
· Wears personal protective equipment, when required.
· Uses pliers, screwdriver, and other small hand tools when making minor machine adjustments.
· Uses crowbar to line up skids when running depalletizer.
· Uses utility knife to cut tape and binding straps.

Education/Knowledge/Experience:
High school degree not required.
Language Skills:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence and complete paperwork. . Ability to effectively present information one-on-one and communicate issues and problems. Limited English required.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add and subtract in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand or sit while monitoring machine operations; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls when making machine adjustments; and reach with hands and arms to load supplies into machines. The employee frequently is required to walk and climb when machines are operated from an elevated platform. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl when maneuvering around machinery.
The employee must regularly lift up to 20 pounds and move up to 50 pounds when replenishing machine supplies. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and depth perception in order to visually monitor machine operations.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Certification/License/ Registration:
Must complete all safety, Food Safety, Food Quality, GMP and policy training as required.
