ASSISTANT COUNTY TRAFFIC ENGINEER
Purpose of Job
The purpose of this classification is to support traffic safety and efficiency efforts by assisting with public consultations, field reviews and the implementation of traffic signals, signage and pavement markings. This role aids in managing traffic-related projects and contributes to maintaining a safe and effective transportation network.
Essential Functions
Essential functions the position will be responsible for include the following:
- Conducts assessments of roadway safety conditions, including preparation of roadway crash diagrams
- Conducts reviews of traffic impact studies prepared by private consultants to verify accuracy and conformance to guidelines
- Assist in addressing public traffic concerns, conduct field reviews, and help recommend safety and operational improvements.
- Support the oversight of signal contractors and collaborate with traffic consultants on signal system needs, including timing plans and equipment.
- Maintain accurate records of traffic system components such as signals, signs, and markings.
- Help develop and implement capital improvement and maintenance plans in collaboration with senior engineers and the Operations Director.
- Contribute to the Traffic Calming Program by assisting with public coordination, plan design, and field construction tasks.
- Provide support to Knox County teams and departments with traffic engineering tasks, including driveway reviews, pavement marking needs, and sight distance measurements.
- Aid in the review of traffic studies, site visits for new developments, and impact analyses in collaboration with EPW Development Services.
- Coordinate with partner agencies on joint projects and traffic coordination issues as directed.
- Assist the Traffic Control Supervisor in resolving work orders and addressing citizen complaints.
Additional Job Functions
- Ensure regular, punctual attendance for self and assigned staff during scheduled work hours.
- Respond to and report immediately if called upon by local, regional or state office supervisors as part of a coordinated Emergency Response by the Knox County Mayor’s Office.
- Perform other duties as required.
Minimum Training & Qualifications
Training and qualifications for the position include the following:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
- Must obtain an Engineering Intern certification in the State of Tennessee within 1 year of employment.
- Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered for employment into the position
- Must possess and maintain a valid TN Driver’s License

Physical Requirements
This position requires the following physical abilities:
- Occasional periods of light physical activity
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, working behind a desk on a computer
- Ability to walk a construction site consisting of uneven terrain
- Must wear personal protection equipment (PPE) that may consist of eye protection, ear protection, hard hats, gloves, etc when visiting construction sites
