Purpose of Job
The purpose of this classification is to provide basic patient care or treatments as well as certain administrative duties.
Essential Functions
- Prepare patients for medical treatments under direct supervision of clinic supervisor, nurses and nurse practitioners
- Collect health information and accurately document in electronic health record system
- Administer vaccinations and other injections as directed.
- Blood and urine specimen collection, specimen processing and packaging.
- Communicate moderately complex information to coworkers and patients
- Perform counseling, navigation, and adherence checks related to disease states and medication
- Communicate lab results to patients in person and over the phone.
- Assist front office staff as needed in patient registration and checkout
- Initiate and complete prior authorizations/prior approvals as indicated by insurance or access patient assistance programs to ensure coverage of treatments and procedures
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Nursing and Office Supervisors
Minimum Training & Qualifications
- The position requires a vocational/technical school diploma from an accredited Medical Assistant (MA) program and one to three years’ related experience
- If the incumbent is an MA, must meet American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) requirements and maintain state and professional certification requirements, if the incumbent is an LPN, must engage in continuing education to meet state and professional licensing requirements and maintain an active license with the Tennessee Board of Nursing
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- May have to physically assist/move patients.
- Must be physically able to operate a variety of office machines, such as a computer, printer, copy machine, facsimile machine, calculator, telephone, overhead projector, and VCR.
- Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials.
