Library Assistant - Children and Youth Services Coordinator

JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Library while maintaining a warm, friendly and welcoming environment. Work with the Library Director to develop and organize various children and youth programs and collection materials.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Works with Library Director to develop and organize children’s and young adult collection
  • Works with Library Director to plan and execute children’s programming
  • Establish and execute relevant children’s outreach opportunities for the library
  • Design and provide engaging activities that help young people develop their creativity, interests, and talents
  • Support and help to implement library reading initiatives, such as the Summer Reading Program and 1000 Books Before Kindergarten.
  • Assists in drafting children's library service policy, as assigned
  • Monitors the conditions of the children's service area and the security of the children's collection and area
  • Maintains collection of library materials.
  • Process library materials, manage interlibrary loan requests, and assist patrons in accessing external resources.
  • Develops, implements, and engages in library programs and activities.
  • Serves patrons by providing computer assistance, answering reference questions.
  • Maintains a safe library facility and communicates any safety concerns to Library Director.
  • Serves on committees as needed and enrolls in continuing education opportunities should they be required.
  • Collect statistics needed for reports.
  • Handle complaints with tact and professionalism.
  • Advocates for the library in a variety of situations.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Library Director.

EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Excellent communication (listening, speaking, writing, presentation) skills.
  • Ability to use computer hardware/software for library applications.
  • Possess an enthusiastic interest in books, reading, literacy and other media.
  • Exhibits a practical and working knowledge of library resources and technology.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Exhibits initiative and creativity.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Protect patron security and information.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of the job this position may need to frequently stand, walk, or sit. Frequently lift and/or moving up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 25 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job the employee will interact with a diverse group of employees and patrons and a variety of work environments. The work schedule includes participation in the evening and weekend rotations.

Teamwork is also the basis of the library staff. There may be times that light cleaning will be required, such as with program events. Staff work together for preparation and clean-up.
