Job Title: DOT/Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager
Employment Type: Direct Hire
Location: Carson, CA
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 1st Shift
Pay Range: $90,000 – $95,000 annually
Position Overview
The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Manager plays a key leadership role in ensuring compliance with all safety regulations related to chemical transportation, handling, and cleaning operations. The position has a strong focus on DOT and FMCSA compliance. While prior Environmental Health & Safety experience is beneficial, candidates with strong DOT backgrounds will be prioritized.
Key Responsibilities
DOT Compliance & Transportation Safety:
- Serve as the subject matter expert on DOT/FMCSA regulations.
- Ensure fleet compliance with DOT regulations including BIT and VIKTP requirements.
- Maintain current licenses, endorsements, and medical certifications for all CDL drivers; manage Driver Qualification (DQ) files.
- Oversee CDL Drug & Alcohol program, including scheduling of random tests and managing third-party testing site relationships.
- Audit HOS (Hours of Service) logs and coordinate with operations to confirm driver compliance.
- Manage onboarding of new company and independent contractor drivers, including background checks, DOT physicals, and pre-employment screenings.
- Monitor fleet CSA scores and propose corrective actions to improve safety metrics.
- Lead DataQ disputes when CSA observations are inaccurate.
- Ensure compliance with AQMD and CARB on-road/off-road fleet regulations.
- Renew transportation permits and licenses with regulatory bodies.
General EHS Oversight:
- Implement and manage safety policies in accordance with OSHA and hazardous materials regulations.
- Conduct terminal/facility inspections to identify safety hazards and enforce corrective measures.
- Perform chemical risk assessments and maintain accurate documentation.
- Lead incident investigations (injuries, spills, property damage) and prepare reports for insurance and regulatory agencies.
- Support claims processes including Workers’ Comp and Occupational Accident programs.
- Lead and maintain company Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); oversee creation, revisions, and training.
- Organize and lead safety committee meetings with operational staff.
- Supervise and mentor the Safety Associate.
Administrative & Leadership Duties:
- Prepare reports for legal, insurance, and regulatory use.
- Drive a safety-first culture by providing coaching, training, and support to employees.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health & Safety or a related field preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in safety management, ideally in chemical, petrochemical, or transportation industries.
- Strong knowledge of DOT/FMCSA and OSHA regulations is required.
- Certification in auditing techniques or root-cause analysis (CQA) is a plus.
- Exceptional leadership and people management skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Highly organized with strong critical thinking and decision-making skills.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to climb stairs and ladders including trailers, tractors, and railcars.
- Ability to lift up to 60 lbs (team lift required).
- Must be able to stand for long durations.
- Flexibility to work extended or off-hour shifts in response to urgent safety issues.
Work Environment
- Industrial setting with exposure to hazardous chemicals, seasonal weather conditions, and loud equipment.
- Occasional overnight travel required.
