What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pharmacy Technician position at Koshland Pharm: Custom Compounding Pharmacy?
If you want to learn and be challenged as you process orders for high-quality, custom-made medications in an office environment, this job might be for you. Our team of 35 work in our downtown San Francisco SOMA lab compounding special medications that aren’t available at regular pharmacies. You are not compounding (making) medications in our lab -- that job is handled by our highly trained compounding technician team who works next door to you. Instead, your job is to accurately process customized prescription orders which is the start of our workflow process. You also help patients every day, mainly by phone, text and email communication.
Your role as a processing prescription and customer care specialist is highly specialized and focused. Your job is to use your background knowledge as a pharmacy technician to efficiently and accurately process customized prescription orders so that they can be made by our compounding technician team. You also have the important role of providing attentive customer service for our patients. We know that the personal care you and your team provides is an important part of the patient's healing journey.
You're surrounded with highly trained colleagues, including your immediate processing/customer service team of five people, five pharmacists, and our Founder Peter Koshland, a graduate of UCSF School of Pharmacy, who started our independent and specialized compounding pharmacy in 2009. Hear from Peter about how our pharmacy serves as a key resource for patients' health and healing (https://www.koshlandpharm.com/patients/about-compounding/).
Your office space is adjacent to our state-of-the-art compounding lab. You are challenged to learn to recognize and handle the processing of prescriptions not seen in typical retail settings or even in hospitals. Nearly all your work is done by phone or e-mail, and most of our prescriptions are mailed out. Most patients are very grateful that they finally found the right prescription for them, and you’ll have a hand in making their experience seamless. Of course, there is the occasional demanding customer, but you’re almost never face to face.
Prior to working here, one of your teammates was a pharmacy technician who worked in a retail pharmacy, but did not like how you had to watch the clock because all orders had a time on them and you had to finish them before the time was up. Now she gets to focus on quality over quantity because the workflow here is based on getting the orders done correctly and not on how fast you are. She also appreciates the clear and fast communication with team leaders, and the work/life balance the position offers. Another of your teammates was a pharmacist in her home country of Turkey before immigrating to the U.S. What she loves most about this work is the constant learning—it’s amazing how every day brings new insights about formulations, ingredients, and their various uses. But more than that, it’s the opportunity to help people that truly resonates with her. Being able to dispense customized medicines tailored to individual needs makes a real difference in their lives, and that connection is incredibly rewarding.
We are willing and eager to teach you what you need to know about the world of compounded medications. Pharmacy or health care experience is required. You need exceptional communication skills; solid data entry skills; an ability to work in a busy pharmacy setting; a track record of dependability; demonstrated commitment to past positions; and outstanding attention to detail.
Apply if this sounds interesting to you. In our interview, we’ll figure out together if it’s a right fit for each of us.
