DEFINITION
The Patient Safety Coordinator is responsible for the day-to-day implementation and evaluation of the processes and activities noted in the Patient Safety Plan. The Patient Safety Coordinator will work collaboratively with the Chief Nursing Officer and Director/Manager of Quality Management in establishing the Patient Safety Framework and a culture of Patient Safety.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is a single position class in which the incumbent’s responsibility of functioning must be based on the advance knowledge and skill of process improvements that will support the reduction of medical/health care errors and other factors that contribute to unintended adverse patient outcomes. This role provides leadership for safety assessments, coordinates the activities of the patient safety committee, educates other practitioners on the system-based cause for medical errors, consults with management and staff, and communicates literature-based ideas regarding effective patient safety strategies to others within the organization. Key responsibilities of this position also include working with all services to hardwire reliable delivery of healthcare systems that incorporate best practice patient safety methodologies.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Minimum, possession of Associate Degree in Nursing or successful completion of an accredited Registered Nurse Program as evidenced by licensure, from a recognized college or university. Preferred, Bachelor’s Degree in patient care related field.

Experience
At least 2 years of experience (five years preferred) with progressive responsibility working in a quality/performance improvement and/or patient safety department.
Preferred experience with the Press Ganey Patient Engagement survey.
Minimum 2 years RN experience in an acute care hospital setting.
Licensure:
Current California RN license or ability to obtain prior to start date.

Knowledge of:
The Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals
California Department of Public Health Guidelines
Previous experience with health IT systems and data reports preferred
Ability to:
Excellent critical thinking, data analysis, team building and leadership change management skills preferred
Demonstrates evidence of essential leadership, communication, education, collaboration, and counseling skills
Experience in leading meetings
Ability to identify and implement appropriate patient communication strategies and overcome accessibility barriers, as required
