SUMMARY
The surgical technician assists surgeons and other medical professionals in hospital operating rooms and surgery center environments. Their main duty is to prepare patient’s rooms and equipment for pending surgical procedures. They also assist during those procedures as part of a team of operating room professionals.
REQUIREMENTS
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Secures and prepares all supplies required for surgical intervention.
- Ensures the preparation and maintenance of the sterile field in the operating room and the cleaning and care of surgical instruments according AORN guidelines.
- Performs instrument counts prior to each procedure.
- Helps prepare surgeons and nurses to go into the sterile environment by helping them put on caps, gloves, and operating room clothing.
- Ensure no violation of sterile procedures occurs during surgery.
- Prepares patient for surgery, which includes shaving, cleaning, and disinfecting surgery sites.
- Supports the surgeon by passing instruments to the surgeon during surgery.
- Positions and re-positions patient during surgery.
- Helps monitor patients during surgery for and maintain patient safety.
- Provides supportive care during the pre-operative phase.
- Collects and labels specimens taken during surgical procedure.
- Follows all federal, state and departmental safety procedures.
- Assists with the transportation of patients to and from the operation room.
- Delivers charts with the physician’s orders for the patient to the nursing staff.
- Assists with Terminal cleaning.
- Performs other duties, as necessary.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma/GED or combination of education and experience.
- Surgical technician certification from an accredited school or training program required.
- A minimum of 1 year experience in a hospital or outpatient operating room is highly desired.
- BLS required. American Heart Association BLS preferred.
- Surgical Technician certification from The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting preferred.
SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS:
- Familiarity with all surgical instruments and equipment.
- Working knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique.
- Must have excellent communication skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Body Positions: Sitting and standing for prolonged periods.
- Body Movements: Arm and hand dexterity.
- Body Senses: Must have command of close and distant sight, color perception and hearing.
- Strength: Ability to lift and move up to 50-pounds.
- May be required to stand for long periods of time depending on the type of surgery being administered.
