Job Description
We are seeking motivated and trainable Fiber Optic Technicians for our West Coast Field Services Division. This role involves the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of voice, video, and data communications networks. Most of the work is conducted onboard U.S. Navy ships, working with single or multi-strand multi-mode or single-mode fiber optic cables, primarily within government facilities.
This position offers the opportunity to learn and develop specialized skills. We provide on-the-job training and mentorship to help you grow within the role.
Ideal candidates include:
- Former Navy IC/ET/AT/EM technicians or those with similar technical backgrounds.
- Individuals with a willingness to learn and grow in the fiber optics field.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, terminate, label, test, troubleshoot, and certify cabling components.
- Read and interpret customer work item instructions, drawings, and cable routing diagrams.
- Terminate fiber optic connectors in accordance with Military Standards and NAVY Standard Items.
- Perform in-process and final tests using optical test equipment.
- Troubleshoot and repair damaged or non-conforming cable assemblies.
- Document and maintain detailed test and inspection records.
- Ensure proper setup and calibration of termination and test equipment.
Requirements
- High school diploma, GED, or industrial school certificate.
- Willingness to travel within and outside of the continental United States.
- Ability to pass a drug test and background check for access to Navy bases and vessels.
- Must be able to ascend/descend stairs/ladders/ramps, aboard ships in shipyards.
- Physical capability to walk, stand, bend, stretch, squat, and lift heavy equipment (minimum 30 lbs.).
- Comfortable working in confined spaces, high heat, humidity, noise, and industrial conditions.
- Ability to obtain a DBIDS credential is required.
Desired (Trainable) Qualifications
- Ability to obtain a DOD Secret Clearance.
- Familiarity with Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR), Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR), and Time-Domain Reflectometry (TDR) testing.
- Familiarity with IAW MIL-STD-2042, Navy Installation & Maintenance Handbook (NIMB), and NAVSEA Standard Items.
- Previous certification in fiber optic connectorization and inspection per Navy Standard Item 009-73 and MIL-STD-2042.
- Electrical background or trade school graduate.
- Ex-Navy Electronics field experience.
- DOD Secret Clearance is a plus.
