What are the responsibilities and job description for the RN PreOp/PACU position at KU MedWest Ambulatory Surgery?
The Pre/Post Registered Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and coordinating patient care from admission to discharge. The Pre/Post Registered Nurse is responsible for the achievement of patient outcomes through implementation of critical pathways and in accordance with the mission, vision, and values of the facility. The Pre/Post RN prepares the patient for surgery and cares for the patient post-operatively with on-going nursing assessment including vital signs, point of care testing, reviewing medical history, and frequently re-assessing the patient to ensure optimal outcomes. The Pre/Post RN is responsible for pain management, medication administration and discharge instructions. The Pre/Post RN is part of the peri-operative clinical nursing team.
Role and Responsibilities
- Works within the scope of nursing practice
- Follows infection control guidelines of the facility
- Completes tasks to provide efficient turnover and work flow within the surgery center
- On-going patient assessment to ensure optimal patient outcomes
- Administers medication safely and according to facility guidelines
- Communicates effectively and professionally with others
- Participates in quality improvement projects and initiatives to improve patient care and safety
- Delegates tasks as necessary
- Performs other tasks as assigned.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program
- Unrestricted RN license recognized in the state of Kansas (KS single state or multi-state compact license)
- High level of organization and prioritization skills
- Organized, detail oriented, proactive, and ability to problem solve and work well with others
- Current BLS or within 6 months of hire. Maintains current BLS certification
- Current ACLS or within 6 months of hire. Maintains current ACLS certification
- Current PALS or within 6 months of hire. Maintains PALS certification
Preferred Skills
- BSN preferred
- Nursing certification preferred
- Previous experience in an ASC preferred
- Two years critical care or Pre/Post nursing experience preferred
Working Conditions
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time
- In normal working day, an employee may stand 4 hours, walk 3 hours and sit 1 hour
- Intermittent physical mobility/activity including walking, standing, sitting, light lifting, pulling and pushing of carts, equipment, etc. Must be able to bend body downward at the waist; be able to kneel; wear PPE
- Able to assist with transferring patients, must be able to lift 40 pounds
- May have exposure to bloodborne pathogens and hazardous chemicals
