Position Summary
The Diversified Agriculture Technician at Makaua Orchard supports the establishment, maintenance, and productivity of our diversified agriculture program. This position plays a crucial role in creating and maintaining efficient orchard systems that produce high-quality tropical fruits. The Makaua diversified agriculture program is focused on creating and maintaining efficient orchard systems which produce high-quality tropical fruits. Over the past year, our team has worked to convert old marginal pastures into fruit orchards and are continuing to expand our footprint and plantings. Currently, we are growing the following tree crops: cacao, mixed citrus, avocado, and mango.
Under the direction of the Diversified Agriculture Site Manager, the Technician will execute daily farm operations, including orchard management, irrigation, harvesting, and general site maintenance. This role requires a hands-on approach and a commitment to sustainable agricultural practices.
Key Responsibilities
Orchard Management: Assist in planting, pruning, fertilization, and pest control to support tree health and maximize fruit yield.
Irrigation & Infrastructure Maintenance: Install, maintain, and repair irrigation systems to ensure optimal water distribution.
Harvest & Post-Harvest Processing: Harvest fruit and assist with cleaning, sorting, and packaging for distribution.
Land & Site Maintenance: Maintain orchard grounds, manage weeds, and implement soil conservation techniques.
Equipment Operation: Safely operate and maintain small farm equipment, including tractors, mowers, and hand tools.
Record-Keeping & Compliance: Document crop progress, log food safety data, and adhere to agricultural regulations.
Team Collaboration: Work alongside fellow technicians, supporting an efficient and productive team environment.
Other Duties: Assist with special projects, site expansions, and other farm-related tasks as assigned.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. regularly.
Comfortable working outdoors in hot, humid, rainy, or muddy conditions.
Frequent walking, standing, bending, kneeling, and working in uneven terrains.
Exposure to agricultural inputs such as fertilizers, pest control products, and organic matter.
Manual labor, including planting, pruning, and harvesting.
Minimum Qualifications
Prior experience in agriculture, farming, or horticulture.
Basic knowledge of irrigation systems, planting, fertilization, and pest control.
Ability to operate and maintain farm tools and small machinery.
Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in orchard management or tropical fruit production.
Knowledge of sustainable agriculture practices.
Experience operating tractors and other mechanized farm equipment.
Basic computer literacy for logging farm data (training provided).
