What are the responsibilities and job description for the Math and Reading Center Assistant / Tutor position at Kumon of Spring Valley Village?
- Must be available to work 4 days a week, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday, between 3:00 -7:00 PM.
Center Assistants are an integral part of any Kumon Center and they play an important role both in center operations and in developing our Kumon Students. Many of them were former Kumon Students themselves, so they know the program inside and out, and they possess the skills that the Kumon Method aims to impart on its students. Some even aspire to one day have careers in education or child care. Did you know that some of our Kumon Instructors even started as Center Assistants? The possibilities are truly endless! Here are just a few of the important functions they serve as part of the Kumon Center.
Assisting Students
Kumon Students can enroll as early as age three all the way through high school, so one main responsibility of any Assistant is to support our students. Unlike tutoring, this support offered on an as-needed basis in order to encourage students to find the answers on their own. They provide hints to guide students through their work and help keep them motivated. Based on their observations and interactions with students, Center Assistants provide valuable feedback to the Instructor who can then adjust a student’s learning plan and goals if needed.
Working with Early Learners
Many Center Assistants work specifically with Early Learner students who have particular needs and are still learning basic skills. Some of these young students need to learn basic skills like how to hold a pencil and write their letters and numbers neatly before other skills can be developed. They also need help learning the Kumon routine and how to work through worksheets independently. The Instructor will set a specific set of goals for each early learner which may vary from day to day and week to week, so a bit of hands-on guidance from a Center Assistant helps keep them on track.
Grading & Recording Student Progress
For school-age Kumon Students, correcting their mistakes is a critical part of the learning process. Having worksheets graded immediately after completion, allows them the opportunity to review and correct mistakes. This helps to accelerate their learning as they can learn from mistakes, master material more quickly and move on. Some Assistants at the Kumon Center called Graders, will grade both student homework and classwork. They also help record student results so that the Instructor can focus on tracking student progress, refining lesson plans and setting goals.
Communication
With so many students to support, communication is vital. Center Assistants help to ensure that students know what they need to do and help keep the center organized. For example, they might help students check–in and check-out on class days, respond to customer inquiries, or communicate updates to parents. They’re the Instructor’s eyes and ears, help keep the center running smoothly and help students focus on learning.
