JOB TITLE: Temporary Bus Mechanic (up to approximately 1 year)

REPORTS TO: Transportation Supervisor
CALENDAR: 245 Days ayear
HOURS: Full Time
SALARY: $23.87 - 27.97/hour plus benefits

JOB SUMMARY:
Perform major mechanical repairs with minimal supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED
- ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification
- Demonstrated ability to accomplish the major duties listed below
- Hold a CDL with passenger endorsement or able to attain
- Have a clean driving record
- Pass a drug and alcohol test, criminal background check and physical examination
- Perform work which involves frequent lifting, pushing, and/or pulling of objects which may approximate 50 pounds and up to 100 pounds
- May be required to work around foul odors and loud noise
- Be willing to attend and satisfactorily complete at least 30 hours of training as required in the State Transportation Manual
- Advanced knowledge of diesel and fuel engine maintenance and repair
- Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Analyze engine performance and perform tune ups as needed.
- Evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles using diagnostic equipment and appropriate technology.
- Help mechanics evaluate minor mechanical problems and inspect repairs completed.
- Rebuild, replace, or repair major vehicle components, assemblies, and systems including engines, transmission, suspensions, etc.
- Check and repair electrical and cooling systems and install heaters and similar accessories.
- Do welding and perform minor body work.
- Estimate time and materials required to perform major repairs.
- Perform routine vehicle maintenance and preventive care.
- Maintain accurate, updated preventive maintenance records.
- Help train mechanics.
- Abide by all laws, rules, and regulations in the State of Idaho Transportation Manual.
- Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
- Ensure shop, equipment, and tools are in safe operating condition.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work are and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
- Operate buses and vehicles as needed.
- Supervise, monitor and direct work of mechanics.
- Report all accidents to local school authorities and State Department of Education.
- Communicate effectively with the school staff and the public.
- Check to be sure the lights, all equipment, tires, and brakes are safe before driving a bus.
- Know and follow district policy and chain of command.
- Deal with students, parents, staff, and others in a positive, encouraging manner.
- Act ethically and confidentially in all aspects of employment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
