KUOW Puget Sound Public Radio is Seattle’s NPR news station. We are an independent, nonprofit news organization producing award-winning journalism, podcasts and events in service to the 3.9 million people in our coverage area. We have an outstanding opportunity for a part-time (60% FTE) Producer / Announcer.

This role serves as a Producer and an Announcer for KUOW and includes a regular weekend on-air announcer shift and regular production assistance with KUOW programs for broadcast and podcast distribution.

This is a 60% FTE position with regular work on weekends. Candidates must be able to work a varied schedule when required, including some early mornings, evenings and weekend work.

JOB SUCCESS SUMMARY

A successful Producer / Announcer serves as a local on-air voice for the KUOW listening audience and as a member of the content production team. On-air shifts may include working as part of an in-studio team. The position can also include working alone on weekends. On-air work includes writing and voicing break elements during national broadcasts and programs, both live and recorded.

Production work will include assisting with preparing programs for broadcast and podcast distribution. Editing is done primarily with Adobe Audition software under the direction of an editor or senior producer. As part of the KUOW staff you will regularly work with members of the newsroom, Audio Shop, business support, IT and the broadcast operations teams. As part of an on-air shift, an Announcer must maintain a professional studio environment while also maintaining positive, productive relationships with colleagues both inside and outside of the studio. Production work includes the ability to work while meeting deadlines, maintaining professional, collegial relationships with colleagues.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Serve as primary announcer and board operator for assigned shift.
  • Monitor system and KUOW communications and news wire to provide programming updates.
  • Produce, plan, write, edit and voice both live and automated break content during shift.
  • Prerecord announcing breaks for automated programming.
  • Prepare KUOW podcasts for on-air broadcast.
  • Work closely with different show leads and teams to support show production.
  • Mix and upload audio files.
  • Assist with Public Radio Program Distribution system using broadcast software such as Content Depot, PRX, FTP, in conjunction with Zetta and NewsBoss.
  • Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

  • Attend and participate in department or organization meetings and trainings.
  • May back up other announcer shifts as needed.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITY

  • SUCCESS PROFILE

    Knowledge of :

  • Experience using broadcast automation software including Zetta.
  • Experience with digital audio editing software such as Audition, Hindenburg or Pro Tools.
  • Knowledge and experience using a digital broadcast console.
  • FCC broadcast rules covering on-air language and EAS procedures.
  • Ability to :

  • Work in a live broadcasting environment, including taking direction from in-studio producer or network communications.
  • Work alone in broadcast studio outside of regular business hours.
  • Meet tight time deadlines under the supervision of an editor or senior producer.
  • Requirements include :

    Bachelor’s degree and one year of professional broadcast journalism experience or equivalent combination of education / experience. Knowledge of professional broadcast and journalistic standards and practices. Equivalent education / experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license / certification / registration.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Duties include require weekend work and may include working outside of regular business hours on weekdays.
  • Cubicle / Open workspace environment which may result in additional or higher levels of noise and visual distractions.
  • Ability to work alone, without supervision, during weekends, early mornings and evenings.
