The Facility – Taos Picuris Service Unit
The Taos/Picuris Service Unit is the primary source of non-emergency, outpatient services for the members of the Picuris and Taos Pueblos. Specialist consultations from Taos, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque are provided, as needed. Services include Audiology, Behavioral Health, Dental, Health Education, Laboratory, Medical, Nursing, Nutrition, Optometry, Pharmacy, Podiatry, Public Health Nursing, and Radiology.

Pharmacy Technician - RESPONSIBILITIES (listed are included but not limited to)
- Extensive knowledge of pharmaceuticals and pharmacy practices, pharmaceutical and medical nomenclature, trade names – generic name equivalents, available dosage forms and strengths, as well as units-of-measure.
- Must be able to interpret a prescription order.
- Must possess substantial knowledge of the metric system of weights and measures and skill in pharmaceutical mathematical computations.
- Knowledge of inventory control, including the appropriate storage and distribution of pharmaceuticals and the rotation of stock.
- Knowledge of how to procure pharmaceuticals and supplies.
- Knowledge of use of the telephones, the Universal drug counter, the photocopier, the label printer, the pharmacy computer software, and computers for filling prescriptions, placing drug orders, retrieving data, and creating documents as directed.
- Assures proper attention to labeling needs, including specifying directions for use and precautions as necessary.
- Receives the pharmacy prescriptions dispensing reports electronically via the online billing system. Determine if the prescription written by the provider is billable as defined by the Indian Health Service guidelines and input data into the system accordingly. Verify prescription amount dispensed for reimbursement.
- Contact healthcare provider for additional information when services are rendered to the patient and the prescription written for the patient is not clear, or when more details are needed to complete the forms for the episode of care.
- Retrieves medical records. Researches patient records, reconstructs incorrect or missing medical information required to prepare a valid insurance billing when data received is incomplete.
- Able to analyze information regarding Medicaid programs in order to document correctly in the patient record and Point-of-Sale system (POS).
- Knowledge of specific pay plans and group numbers in order to accurately enter the information into the POS computer to ensure they are processed and paid.
- Research and follow-up on rejected claims online in order to ensure maximum reimbursement to the facility. Works with the various Pharmacy Benefits Managers' helpdesks to fix rejects within specified time frames. This includes telephone contacts and any steps necessary for satisfactory resolution of the claim. Documents all information in the medical chart and the POS.
- Serves as a technical resource for the online billing system program, providing ongoing or orientation and training to staff personnel.
- Possession of an active certification from either the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) or from the National Healthcare Association (NHA) as a Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT) is highly preferred but not required.
- Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience as a Pharmacy Technician.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS).
- College-level training experience is desirable, but not required.
- MUST be fully vaccinated for COVID-19.
