The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) is an independent agency of state government charged with regulating the conduct of horse racing and pari-mutuel wagering on horse racing and related activities within the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The KHRC is a leader in the welfare of horse and rider and the safety and integrity of horse racing.
We are looking for a Full-time Horse Racing Veterinarian to join our highly skilled Division of Veterinarian staff.
An exciting opportunity to work with other Kentucky State Veterinarians, assisting with the regulation of horseracing throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky. We are a leader in the safety and integrity of the sport, as well as the welfare of the horse. As a veterinarian, you enforce the rules for racing in all veterinary matters under the authority of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, and performs other duties as required. The horse industry has a $6-7 billion estimated economic impact in Kentucky, and the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission is charged with protecting the confidence of horseracing stakeholders - owners, trainers, breeders, fans, and the wagering public - through enforcement of its regulations.
The applicant must be licensed as a veterinarian by the KY Board of Veterinary Examiners. Must maintain current license as a veterinarian by the KY Board of Veterinary Examiners. Must be willing to travel, including some overnight stays, and be willing to work on weekends and holidays.
Work is typically performed outdoors in horse barns and at racetracks in various counties throughout the Commonwealth (Jefferson, Fayette, Boone, Simpson, Henderson, Knox, Christian). Attention to detail is critical. Incumbent will be exposed to dangers and hazards associated with working around horses and racetracks. Must have a Valid Driver’s License, lift heavy objects, and stand for extended periods, able to use computer, work some overtime and alternate work schedules.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Inspects all horses at a race meet for physical fitness, general condition or for any noticeable condition which may affect the racing condition of a horse. Will administer furosemide injections four hours prior to race time.
- Performs pre-race examination to detect any condition which would affect a horse’s racing performance and advises racing officials of racing fitness of a horse.
- Performs post-race examinations to include blood and urine samples for testing and general condition of the horse.
- Keeps and maintains all records of examinations and testing for the Horse Racing Commission.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
