What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Assistant Internship position at L'Arche Chicago?
L’Arche Chicago invites you to apply for our Summer Assistant Internship, where you would share life with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and other assistants in one of our three community homes.
At L’Arche, we seek to create an intentional community of genuine belonging, one that welcomes difference and celebrates the unique gifts of all people. As a summer intern, you would become part of this community by taking on the role of an assistant and sharing in daily life with core members (individuals with IDD) and other assistants — making dinner together, watching television, going to the gym, or heading up the street for a cup of coffee.
As an assistant, you would provide direct care support to the core members. For example, most days, assistants support core members with cleaning the home, cooking meals, and attending to personal care. You would also be trained to support core members with medications, transportation, appointments, budgeting, and behavioral interventions.
During your time at L’Arche, you can expect personal and professional growth, rooted in real relationships of mutual support with core members and assistants. Come be a part of creating a community and a world where people with disabilities are at the center!

L’Arche Chicago’s summer internship is a 10-week program. You would be invited to live in one of our homes during the duration of the internship. This is a paid internship, and your room and board would be a part of your compensation. No experience with people with disabilities is required, and all necessary training would be provided.
Because of our nature as a faith-based care-giving organization, a summer internship with L'Arche would be a valuable experience for students in medicine, nursing, social work, psychology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, philosophy, theology, or education.
People are welcome from diverse backgrounds and faith practices including those with no religious affiliation at all.
Program dates are currently scheduled from May 27-August 2; start and end dates are flexible.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until Friday, March 7.
