What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Counselor Middle School (Anticipated Opening) position at La Crescent-Hokah Public Schools?
- Provide short term support for students regarding academic, educational, and short-term social and emotional problems.
- Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and personal/social skills, goals and plans.
- Consults and collaborates effectively with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs.
- Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented classroom activities to meet student needs and school goals, including career awareness and career exploration and decision making.
- Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals
- Accurately and appropriately use assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services.
- Implements an effective referral and follow-up process as needed.
- Work with students, families, and staff to create plans of support for students who require them.
- Assists teachers, parents/guardians, and other stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student data.
- Main point of contact for students and staff through the annual registration process and student scheduling.
- Assist with the creation of the master schedule for the school.
- Track grades and credit completion during the school year to ensure student growth and student achievement..
- Organize field trips that pertain to career/college planning and exploration
- Organize new student welcome meetings and provide paperwork in the case of a student transferring
- Present to classrooms on various mental health and career topics.
- Adhere to the laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the school counseling profession.

TITLE: Middle School Counselor
SALARY & BENEFITS: Based on current teacher contract
QUALIFICATIONS: Must hold a current teacher license in School Counseling or be able and willing to obtain one prior to the start of the assignment
DIRECT SUPERVISOR: Building Principal
CONTRACT DAYS & HOURS: 185 days from mid-August through mid-June as dictated by the annual school calendar. On contract days, building hours are typically 7:30am - 3:30pm, but may be occasionally changed or extended to help fulfill professional duties. Some time outside of the building will be needed to successfully complete duties and responsibilities listed below.
Additionally, the Middle School Counselor has an extra 75 hours of paid time that should be used between the last workshop day in the spring and the opening workshop week in the fall. The schedule for the summer should be arranged with the building principal prior to the start of the summer.
