This is a seasonal opportunity to gain real-life experience in the field of civil engineering. The role is a technical position working under the general direction of the Highway Engineer responsible for assisting the Highway Engineer and Assistant Engineer in performing civil engineering work relating to highway system planning, design, construction, and maintenance activities for county highways, bridges, culverts, and other appurtenances on the county road system; supervises highway maintenance, construction and related projects.
Seasonal employment is expected to last mid-May through late August. The hours will be Monday-Thursday 6 : 00am-4 : 00pm.

Inspects culverts and drainage areas, evaluates the data, and develops a work plan. Inventories and inspects various field highway situations.
Assists with development of road and bridge improvement and maintenance plans.
Maintains equipment used and related to work activities (i.e. survey tools, CADD work station, etc.).
Keeps records of work performed and time involved in performing the work.
Assists with Investigation, surveys, CSM preparation, plat of survey, PLE and TLE documents / drawings for various County projects.
Works safely and follows safety practices and standards of the County Highway Department; responsible for reporting and / or correcting any existing or potential safety or accident hazard.
Physical Demands : Physical effort involved in occasional lifting up to 75 pounds, twisting, and bending. Frequent lifting and carrying small tools, equipment, and materials, is required. May require walking (up to 10 miles per day) and standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and / or leg controls. Must be able to perform work safely in areas of hazards including working in and / or around heavy construction equipment, high-speed traffic, culverts, bridges, steep slopes, streams, and wetlands. Job-specific close visual acuity may be required. May require frequent exposure to adverse temperatures and / or weather conditions. Approximately 50% of work is performed in a general office environment and approximately 50% is performed in the field throughout the year. Steel toe boots and other protective items are worn. Requires near and far vision for driving vehicles, inspecting road and operating equipment. Reads and writes instructions and records.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices related to road and bridge construction and maintenance or other public works.
Knowledge of construction plans and specifications.
Knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of land, construction, and location surveying, geodetic control, or mapping sufficient to effectively perform construction and location surveying.
Knowledge of and ability to perform advanced mathematics through algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, as applied to surveying and engineering computations.
Ability to use specialized equipment to perform precise, exacting operations.
Ability to work cooperatively with customers, stakeholders, and coworkers.
Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions and directions.
Ability to take responsibility for the quality and timeliness of work as demonstrated by completing assigned tasks, reporting work progress, and demonstrating behavior consistent with Department direction.

Training, Experience and Other Requirements
Enrolled in either Associate's Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or Civil Engineering Bachelor's Degree Program or a Planning or Construction degree program.
Must be at least 18 years old.
Must successfully complete a criminal background check and pre-employment physical with 75-pound lifting ability.
This position does not qualify for any County benefits.
