Job Summary: The Elementary School Psychologist is responsible for promoting the psychological, social, and emotional well-being of students at the elementary school level. This role involves conducting assessments, providing counseling, and working collaboratively with teachers, parents, and other school staff to support the academic and personal growth of students. The psychologist will play a critical role in creating a safe and supportive learning environment that fosters positive mental health and addresses behavioral and emotional challenges.
Key Responsibilities:
- Psychological Assessments:
- Administer psychological tests and evaluations to assess students' cognitive, emotional, and behavioral needs.
- Interpret assessment results and collaborate with teachers and parents to develop appropriate interventions.
- Counseling and Support:
- Provide individual and group counseling services to students dealing with a variety of emotional, behavioral, and social issues.
- Support students through crisis situations, offering guidance and coping strategies.
- Develop and implement intervention plans for students struggling with mental health issues, anxiety, depression, bullying, or peer conflicts.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with classroom teachers, administrators, and special education teams to address the needs of students and implement strategies that promote a positive learning environment.
- Collaborate with parents to provide support, resources, and guidance to help address their child's needs at home and school.
- Behavioral Support and Intervention:
- Develop and implement positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) for students exhibiting challenging behaviors.
- Provide strategies and techniques to staff to manage classroom behavior and create a supportive school climate.
- Consultation and Training:
- Provide training and guidance to school staff on issues related to mental health, behavioral concerns, and effective classroom management strategies.
- Offer consultation services to parents and teachers regarding academic, social, and emotional challenges students may face.
- Program Development and Implementation:
- Design and implement prevention programs and initiatives to support student well-being, such as anti-bullying campaigns or social-emotional learning (SEL) curricula.
- Monitor the effectiveness of interventions and adjust as needed to ensure the success of the students.
- Referral and Support Services:
- Make referrals to external mental health professionals or community resources for additional support when necessary.
- Follow up on referrals to ensure students are receiving appropriate care and support.
- Record Keeping and Documentation:
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of counseling sessions, assessments, and interventions.
- Prepare reports and provide documentation for student IEPs (Individualized Education Programs) or 504 Plans as needed.
Qualifications:
- Master's or Doctoral degree in School Psychology or a related field.
- Certification or licensure as a School Psychologist in the state of employment.
- Experience working with children in an educational setting, preferably at the elementary level.
- Knowledge of child development, behavioral psychology, and mental health disorders.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with diverse groups of people.
- Experience with counseling, crisis intervention, and behavioral management strategies.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to observe and interact with students in a variety of settings (classrooms, offices, playgrounds, etc.).
