The La Mesa-Spring Valley School District is recruiting for Substitute School Bus Attendants and School Bus Drivers. The job of Substitute School Bus Attendant was established for the purpose/s of assisting students with and without special needs during transport to and from school and/or special activities; ensuring the safety and sanitation of assigned vehicles; and working in conjunction with bus drivers to ensure student safety and maintenance of a positive environment during transport. The job of Substitute School Bus Driver was established for the purpose(s) of driving a school bus to transport students safely and efficiently to an assigned locationon a designated route; assures safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from buses; performs regular safety inspections.
As a substitute employee hours are not guaranteed (substitutes can work as little or as much as desired); position is not benefits eligible.

Substitute School Bus Attendant: (*Additional duties for Substitute School Bus Driver)
Assists in shaping appropriate student behavior through positive reinforcement and other strategies; redirects inappropriate student behavior according to established District policies, techniques and procedures.
Assists school bus drivers in the loading, unloading and securing of students with disabilities; assures seat belts, harnesses and wheelchair clamps are secured as required.
Assures the health and safety of students by following established practices and procedures.
Communicates with students, teachers and parents regarding special needs for students, bus schedules and other related concerns or questions; assists substitute drivers over routes as necessary.
Determines appropriate action in emergency situations according to established guidelines; provides basic medical care and first aid to students according to established procedures and policies; contacts local emergency services personnel as necessary.
Maintains order and discipline among passengers; advises students and other passengers of appropriate behavior; monitors and independently supervises students until released to teacher, instructional assistant, parent, or other authorized person; assures compliance with bus safety procedures; notifies administrators of potential problems or safety concerns.
Operates equipment, including wheelchair lifts, tie downs, seat belts, harnesses and other adaptive equipment as necessary.
Prepares related logs and reports as necessary including route sheets, bus referrals, incident and CPS reports.
Rides a school bus or other District vehicle to provide safe and secure transportation for students with physical, educational and emotional special needs.
Valid First Aid and CPR certifications issued by an authorized agency.
Basic concepts of child growth and development and behavior characteristics.
Child guidance principles and practices related to children with special education needs.
Safe practices concerning school bus transportation.
Student behavior management strategies and techniques.
Problems and concerns of students with special needs.
Basic record-keeping techniques.
Applicable laws, rules and regulations.

ABILITY TO: (*Additional knowledge for Substitute School Bus Driver)
Ride a school bus with children with special needs and assist school bus driver in maintaining discipline while bus is in operation ensuring safety of students.
Learn the proper operation of mechanical lift, wheel chairs, seat belts, restraining harnesses and wheelchair clamping devices.
Load, unload and secure students with special needs.
Maintain proper records and documentation.
Assist student loading, unloading and seating arrangements as required.
Demonstrate an understanding, patient and receptive attitude toward assigned students with special needs.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Lift students according to established guidelines.
Maintain routine records.
Observe health and safety regulations.
Maintain a safe discipline level among passengers.
Drive a school bus safely and efficiently.Learn and apply policies and procedures related to student discipline on buses. Observe legal and defensive driving practices. Learn and follow designated routes. Maintain bus in clean and proper working condition. Conduct safety inspections and perform routine preventive maintenance. Meet schedules and timelines. Operate a two-way radio.

- Conducts required daily safety inspections of buses; inspects the interior, exterior and engine of buses to assure safe operational condition;reports mechanical malfunctions or other problems as required; prepares and maintains related maintenance records.
- Drives a school bus along a designated route; picks up and discharges students in accordance with time schedules; observes legal and defensive driving practices; assures compliance with applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes and regulations.
- Prepares related logs and reports as necessary including pre-trip, field trips, accident, passenger incident and inspection reports; maintains route, passenger misconduct, mileage and student counts records.
- Transports students, faculty and parents on field trips or other events; meets scheduled departure and arrival times as assigned.
- Utilizes two-way radios for bus to bus and bus to base communications.Substitute School Bus Attendant: (*Additional qualifications for Substitute School Bus Driver)
Valid First Aid and CPR certifications issued by an authorized agency.
- California School Bus Driver’s Certificate
- Valid California Class B Driver License with P/S endorsement
