Position Summary: Animal Care Technicians are responsible for the daily care of all animals at the La Plata County Humane Society. This position requires the proper feeding, cleaning and disinfecting of all areas to provide a healthy environment for all animals in our care. The kennel team provides our animals with sustenance, love, support, daily exercise, and enrichment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Thoroughly cleans and disinfects all animal holding rooms on a daily basis. Washes and sterilizes water and food bowls. Wash, dry and fold laundry. Rotates between the kennel and cattery.
- Responsible for the daily feeding and monitoring of eating habits of all animals.
- Observes animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease or discontent and report signs appropriately. Fulfills POC (Point of Communication) roll on assigned day (after 90 day review).
- Learn about and utilize animal handling skills aligning with the fear free program and behavioral training. Administer routine animal vaccinations and medications to animals when needed. Gains knowledge of the various breeds of animals, identifying sex of animals and vaccinations. Assists volunteers when needed.
- Assists the public with viewing adoptable animals.
- Properly stocks and organizes all animal holding areas. Maintains equipment used to complete jobs assignments and keeps equipment and tools in good working condition.
- After 90 days assists the behavior department with viewing adoptable animals.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Must be 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs or more. Ability to be on your feet for long periods of time.
- Ability to take direction. Must be willing to learn and develop professionally.
- Effective communication, organization, and multitasking skills.
- Attention to detail.
- Experience in animal welfare is preferred but not required.
- Customer service skills and the ability to work with others in a fast-paced environment.
- Holidays and weekends may be required.
