Position Type: Full Time/ Part Time (hourly)
Pay Range: $19-$22/hour (CONPA)
Position Summary: The medical team provides the La Plata County Humane Society shelter and our community with essential services to ensure the health and wellbeing of the pets in our county. Medical Assistants are responsible for helping the LPCHS Medical Manager and contracted veterinarians in their daily duties, as well as the cleaning and disinfecting of areas to provide a healthy environment for animals in our care. This position requires some medical duties, attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to carefully follow instructions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Clean surgery suite daily, including kennels.
- Clean, fold, and restock laundry.
- Stock surgery suite as needed.
- Maintain controlled substance drug log.
- Fill pill organizers as needed.
- Ensure that animals are receiving needed vaccines; ensure revaccination list is up to date; make a vaccination list for the exam room.
- Give vaccines when able.
- Update kennel card vaccine status.
- Ensure that medical records are properly updated.
- Perform basic medical treatments for animals when necessary.
- Perform humane euthanasia.
- Assist veterinarian with appointments and rounds (seeing shelter animals).
- Assist the public with discharge information and medical instructions as needed.
- Assist in surgery:
- Assemble and properly sterilize surgical packs and instruments.
- Ensure that all packs (instruments, drapes, etc.) are prepared.
- Assist primary surgical technician with anesthetizing an animal for surgery.
- Identify animals on surgery schedule and prepare them for procedures:
- Weigh animal
- Put animal in a clean and properly prepared surgery suite kennel
- Enter medical record for animal receiving procedures
Skills and Qualifications:
- Must be 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs or more.
- Ability to be on your feet for long periods of time.
- Ability to take direction.
- Must be willing to learn and develop professionally.
- Effective communication, organization, multitasking skills, and attention to detail.
- Customer service skills and the ability to work with others in a fast-paced environment.
- Euthanasia Certification (or be willing to get one).
- Holidays and weekends may be required.
- Experience in animal welfare is preferred.
