POSITION SUMMARY : The Program Instructor at the La Porte County Family YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for participants in classes and / or activities. This role involves planning and delivering appropriate activities that support the YMCA mission.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Fulfill Y’s mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.
  • Conduct classes / programs when scheduled while maintaining a safe environment.
  • Instructor will be responsible for finding a replacement if they are unable to lead their scheduled class / program. Instructors may not cancel class / program without the permission of their supervisor and the supervisor must be contacted a minimum of 24 hours in advance.
  • Instructor must be fully prepared and on time for all classes / program.
  • Must set up and put away equipment and / or supplies used in conjunction with the class / program.
  • Instructors will dress and act in a professional and appropriate manner.
  • Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Complete incident and accident reports as necessary. Report any issues or safety concerns immediately to supervisor.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Know appropriate emergency and safety procedures and proper exits for everyone in the facility.
  • Builds relationships with members and building participants.
  • Communicates effectively with participants and parents / guardians when applicable.
  • Participate as an active team member for the overall advancement of the Association.
  • Exemplify the YMCA core values of caring, respect, responsibility, and honesty.
  • Promote and incorporate the YMCA’s core values and mission into all aspects of the job in the community.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Works effectively with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and perceptions.
  • Experience in specific program area is preferred.
  • Minimum age requirement is 16 years.
  • Must possess strong human relations skills and ability to communicate with participants and staff.
  • Ability to lead a group while maintaining control and structure.
  • Required trainings :
  • Within 30 days of hire : Child Abuse Prevention (West Bend online).

  • Within 30 days of hire : Blood Borne Pathogens (West Bend online).
  • Within 60 days of hire : CPR and First Aid
  • Within 90 days of hire : Listen First and Y Welcome
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

  • While performing duties of this job, the employee is often required to : climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, reach with hands, sit stand for an extended period of time, climb ladders, walk, shovel snow, plow snow, lift and / or move up to 50 pounds, have finger dexterity, grasp, perform repetitive motions, talk, hear, and have visual acuity.
  • The employee may be exposed to cleaning chemicals and may be exposed to pool chemicals as well.
  • The work is performed both indoors and out and may require travel to various locations.
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee will be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time and will be exposed to hot and cold conditions.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close & distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to focus.
