What are the responsibilities and job description for the 2025-26 Counselor position at LA Promise Fund?
Under the Principal’s guidance, the Counselor is responsible for ensuring all students attending the high school receive information, resources, and support that propel more and more students to be college and career ready. To meet this goal, the Counselor will assist in the development and management of creative initiatives that engage in-coming 9th graders through 12th grade students in a college-going culture of high academic expectations. More specifically, the Counselor will provide an array of college preparatory programming that raises students’ awareness of college and the entrance requirements; that broadens student exposure to college and careers; and that assists and supports students and their families in the college application, tests, and financial aid process. This is a full-time, exempt, year-round position.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Under the guidance of the Principal support a college-going culture where the students and school community view college and career readiness, application, acceptance and success as an opportunity for all students
- Workshops around soft skills and college awareness
- Encouraging students to complete dual enrollment
- Foster and manage partnerships with college preparatory outreach programs
- In collaboration with school admin and counselors, help create the master schedule
- Assist in the creation of grade level specific programming such as 9th grade college field trips; 10th grade A-G awareness and career exposure; 11th grade SAT prep, A-G checks; and a full array of 12th Grade college programs and supports ensuring students are aware of their full array of post-secondary options.
- Assist the Principal in the creation of a data tracking system to ensure that all eligible students and applicants are applying and receiving federal and state aids that they may be entitled or eligible for.
- Assist in management of California Student Aid Commissions (CSAC) reports and completion of FAFSA/Dream Act
- Submit GPA verification upload to CSAC
- Create and monitor IGPs, including transcript evaluation
- Including alternative options such as adult school and non traditional/CA minimum requirements
- Assist in the creation and implementation of a system for progress report interventions for every 5 weeks
- Attend parent meetings/conferences
- Create, track and monitor student teacher tutoring contracts
- Support students social-emotional well-being by connecting them to resources and services on a need-basis
- Work closely with school Social Worker and Psychologist
- Assist in conduct and tracking counseling sessions/circles
- One on One interviews/intakes for social emotional support
- Monitor APEX credit recovery courses including enrollment, course auditing, onboarding utilizing student/parent contracts, and scheduling
- Support Special Education Students
- Attend IEP Meetings as needed
- Create, track and monitor a post-secondary transition plan in collaboration with the Special Education team including Occupational Training and Department of Rehabilitation options
- Manage course articulation through the appropriate portal
- Support a 9th grade cohort under the NSI program
- Other duties as assigned.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree
- Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) credential required
- Experience counseling in an urban school district with students of diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses preferred
- 3 years of work experience in educational environments
- Experience with project management
- College counseling, counseling, school experience and training desired
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong Knowledge of college entrance requirements
- Strong working knowledge and literary around college access data
- Proven ability to develop and execute strategies focused on underrepresented student groups
- Strong organizational, administrative, verbal and written communication
- Resourceful, able to multitask, prioritize and manage time effectively
- Works well in team-oriented environments
