The practice has one Doctor and provides services ranging from general wellness to complex surgeries.
Job Description:
Our Head Veterinary Technician should act as the “Right-Hand” to the Doctor for all things medicine. They should be active in all patient tests and procedures, facilitating patient care both in-patient and out-patient. The Head Tech is relied upon to be fully competent on all treatments in the clinic. The knowledge and know-how will be utilized to communicate with Doctor Assistants, clients, and other Technicians. Below are some of the categories of duties that an ideal candidate would learn to master:
Technician Duties
- Preps animals for surgery independently
- Execute dental procedures with extractions and sutures
- Organizes Technical team to be efficient and productive
- Leads others daily by teaching them new skills and organizing their day
- Collects specimens for out-of-house lab assessment – including cytology, smears, swabs, scraping
- Performs routine in-house lab procedures including urinalysis (collection, microscope analysis, dipstick testing, pH testing), PCV check, running lab machines for hematology (i.e. CBC) and biochemistry, ear smear cytology, skin scrapes
- Dispenses and administers medications and vaccines
- Carry out treatments (medication, fluid pump set up) as prescribed by veterinarian(s)
- Takes radiographs – including proper labeling, attaching to records and sending them to the client
- Prepares patient for surgery or hospitalization (often without assistance) – including: drug calculations, drug administration, IV catheter placement, surgical prep (i.e. shaving and disinfect surgical area)
- Monitors patients under anesthesia – including filling anesthetic sheets and attaching it to patient records
Client Relations
- Maintains the practice philosophy for attracting new clients and retaining existing clients
- Facilitates resolution of client problems (if too difficult, informing the practice manager)
- Presents estimates to client that are difficult or where value of service needs to be explained thoroughly in order to achieve a positive patient outcome
- Able to build most estimates without assistance from the veterinarian
- Has a technical knowledge of all clinic products and medication sold, including dietary and dermatological products
- Able to explain and educate clients on products and answer their questions regarding product purchase/use
Qualifications:
- AVMA Registered Veterinary Technician Certificate preferred
- Minimum 5 years of experience in Veterinary clinics
- Must be able to demonstrate “take charge” capabilities
- May be required to work overtime, and be subject to recall in emergency situations.
- Deals pleasantly and efficiently with clients on the phone and in person, often doing several things at one time
- Physical Effort: Work requires lifting and carrying records and equipment weighing up to 25 lbs; requires sitting or standing for extended periods of time.

Pay: $55,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
