The Division of Pre-Health Academic Advisor II at La Sierra University oversees academic advising and promotes student success within the university’s two-year pre-health programs. This position requires someone with experience in academic counseling, knowledge of the pre-health / healthcare career track, and the ability to leverage campus resources to meet the changing needs of pre-health students.
The advisor works closely with the Division of Pre-Health Director and Assistant Director in planning, developing, maintaining and evaluating programs designed to help La Sierra University students stay on track toward their p rofessional careers. The goal of the Division of Pre-Health is to help students get accepted i nto professional health programs after their time at La Sierra University. T he advisor also works to provide a “home” on campus for pre-health professions students .
Roles and Responsibilities of Advisor
The advisor’s active role entails the following responsibilities :
Advising
Provide high quality academic advising to all two-year Pre-Health students
Work collaboratively to aid the development and implementation of advising programs and initiatives.
Work c ollaboratively with all departments on campus as needed
Prepared for walk-in and last-minute appointments with students
Help students define and develop academic / career plans, regularly meeting with students to ensure they are on track with their plan
Possess an understanding of La Sierra University’s aca demic policies and procedures in order to explain to students as needed
Follow up with students on any report of unsatisfactory work (notice of class probation for poor attendance, notice of AP / CAP / SAP and / or failing grades, incomplete grades from past quarter(s), etc.).
Stay informed of curriculum changes by actively reaching out to departments, attending departmental meetings, faculty meetings, and meetings with student leaders.
Update curriculum sheets for two year pre-health programs.
Maintain an up-to-date advising portfolio with a record of performance to date (grade reports, transcript, requirements completed, etc.), goals & objectives, dates of conferences / webinars / training, and notation of special circumstances.
Refer students to outside resources when intervention from other departments is needed. (e.g., ODS, Counseling, Student Life, etc.)
Proactively contact and be available for student advisees.
Maintain resources for students such as materials and contact information for professional programs in the area.
Department Duties
Oversee the day-to-day operation of the DPH, including answering questions from students, faculty, administrators, and potential students about the two-year Pre-Health Professions programs at La Sierra University.
Maintain records and retention data for all two-year Pre-Health programs to track program completion to con tribute to quarterly reports.
Contribute to department outreach efforts to other Universities for potential collaboration opportunities
Attend conferences and educational meetings as assigned by the Director.
Sponsor the Pre-Nursing club and any other clubs for two-year Pre-Health students
Host campus tours for prospective students to answer any questions they or their families may have about the program or University
Participate in outreach events by presenting or tabling
Give presentations about the department to visiting students and parents
Attend and participate in training programs as assigned
Help plan and execute opportunities for contact with health professionals by way of seminars, workshops, and access to volunteer experiences.
Perform other duties as assigned by administration.

Required Experience
Bachelor's degree required from four-year college or university; with one plus years related experience and / or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
