Position Summary:
The primary role of a Lackawanna County Law Clerk is to undertake legal research and write opinions. The Law Clerk operates with a moderately high degree of independence in performing daily responsibilities and functions as a lead worker over office staff. The Judge must be confident in the Law Clerk’s professionalism in interacting with office staff/court personnel, counsel, litigants and the public.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct legal research.
Prepare draft opinions, orders, memoranda and other legal documents for issuance by the Court.
Review, analyze and summarize case files, dockets, exhibits and litigants’ pleadings.
Prepare caseload statistics, monitor the flow of cases and assist the judge with the management of hearing and trial lists to ensure maximum efficiency.
Communicate with counsel regarding case management and procedural requirements.
Assist the judge during courtroom proceedings.
Work cooperatively with office staff and court personnel.
Provide clerical back-up and support during periods of absence or increased workload.
Perform all other duties assigned.
Essential Requirements:
Law degree from an accredited law school.
Extensive proficiency performing legal research and issue analysis.
Complete familiarity with the rules of procedure of the Commonwealth and Lackawanna County Court.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and related software.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Effectiveness in fostering a sense of teamwork with office staff and court personnel.
The ability to lift up to 15 pounds at a time.
This is a full-time position. Hours are 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, M-F. This position offers comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, prescription, vision, retirement, life insurance and paid benefit time off.

Pay: $35,000.00 - $40,000.00 per year
