Summary
The polishing technician sets up the polishing machine per documented work instructions; loads and runs the workpiece; periodically checks progress of work and makes appropriate machine adjustments. Technician uses test glasses and laser interferometer to ensure that finished parts conform to specifications. Technician must have good close vision for evaluation of cosmetic defects. This job is mildly technical and requires attention to detail.
Polishing Technician (Conventional) I – All of the essential duties and responsibilities listed below would be expected for an employee to perform with guidance and training during the first few years of employment. There will be some positions that will continue to be this level when set ups and adjustments are not made by the employee.
Polishing Technician (Conventional) II – All of the essential duties and responsibilities listed below would be expected for an employee to perform at a confident proficient level in 2 or more years of experience. This would include setting up and making adjustments with minimal supervision.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily after completing the initial training. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Language Skills
Ability to understand, speak and read English to interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to understand problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

- Safety:Hazardous material, escape routes, proper apparel
- Identification and routing of parts
- Quality policy and other general quality issues
- Overtime hours may be required, if needed
- General understanding of the flow of parts
- Bar coding to record flow of parts
- Set up and shut down of machinery including speed, stroke and polishers
- Work under moderate supervision
- Understanding and use of work instructions
- Use and understanding of interferometers
- Use testing equipment such as Micrometers, dial indicators and calipers
- Sharpening tools
- Inspect parts
- Pre-mixing polishing compound
- Cleaning equipment
- Trim polishers
- Use of test glasses
- Make polishers
- Inspect surface of parts for flaws
- Make pitch for polishers
- Maintenance of pitch and polyurethane polishing tools
