Our dedicated team works to empower students, helping them build essential skills to overcome challenges and thrive.The Dean of Students is vital in fostering a positive, professional school environment that promotes student success. This leadership position is responsible for student behavior management, staff support, and the implementation of trauma-informed, positive behavioral interventions in an alternative school setting serving youth ages 10-17 with emotional and behavioral disorders. The Dean of Students ensures a safe, structured, and supportive school environment while collaborating with faculty, staff, students, and families to promote academic and behavioral growth.What a day in the life of the Dean of Students looks like:

  • Foster a safe, inclusive, supportive school culture that encourages student success.
  • Provide direct support to staff and students facing behavioral challenges in the classroom, ensuring effective intervention strategies.
  • Guide and coach students in developing coping mechanisms and problem-solving skills to improve school engagement.
  • Supervise and support instructional aides and other staff in implementing individualized behavioral interventions.
  • Lead crisis intervention efforts, ensuring de-escalation strategies are implemented safely and effectively.
  • Collaborate with school leadership, faculty, and support staff to develop and implement proactive behavior intervention plans.
  • Monitor student conduct, enforce the school’s code of conduct, and oversee discipline procedures focusing on restorative practices.
  • Ensure smooth transitions for students between classes, school, and residential units, providing necessary behavioral support.
  • Utilize standardized communication techniques, including radio communication, to ensure student and staff safety.
  • Provide faculty and staff with self-care breaks to maintain a supportive work environment.
  • Train and mentor staff in Positive Behavior Support strategies, Trauma-Informed Care, and other evidence-based intervention approaches.
  • Maintain a safe and secure school environment, including monitoring student movement and handling situations where students leave the building or premises.
  • Collect and analyze behavioral intervention data, including tracking progress in the Re-Focus Room.
  • Initiate and implement special programming or schedules for students in collaboration with school leadership.
  • Serve as a liaison between students, families, and external agencies, promoting collaboration to support student needs.
  • Support school attendance initiatives by addressing barriers that prevent students from fully engaging in their education.

What you bring to the table:

  • A passion for working with youth and a commitment to helping them succeed.
  • A minimum of a high school diploma or GED (bachelor’s degree in education or a human services-related field preferred) is required.
  • At least three years of experience working with youth with Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities (EBD) in educational, residential, or alternative youth programs.
  • Awareness of and experience leading diverse student and caregiver populations, including different identities such as ethnicity, gender, ability, and LGBTQIA2S status.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multitask, and manage time effectively.
  • A trauma-informed approach with patience, empathy, and the ability to model positive behaviors.
  • Physical ability to engage with active youth, including lifting up to 30 lbs and, in rare cases, safely intervening in crisis situations.
