What are the responsibilities and job description for the Finance Manager position at Lafayette College?
The Finance Manager is primarily responsible for monitoring the financial operations within the institution, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and College policy and leading the strategic financial planning of the College. This position will assist with budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and analysis to provide accurate and timely financial information to senior leadership, board and other key stakeholders. This often involves working closely with division leaders and aligning their financial needs with the College’s strategic plan, campus master plan and priorities. This position reports to the Assistant Vice President of Budget & Analytics.
Budget and Forecasting
- Assist with the preparation and maintenance of the College’s annual operating and capital budget and forecasts.
- Work with academic and administrative departments to gather input for budget or forecasts.
- Monitor performance throughout the year and provide analysis to department heads to ensure fiscal responsibility.
- Lead the long-term strategic planning by projecting future financial needs and creating scenarios to ensure sustainable growth.
- Compare, reconcile and analyze the long-range financial projection to the audited financial statements and annual operating budgets.
- Develop supporting documentation for the financial model delineating planning assumptions, key variables, methodologies, and presentation materials.
- Develop key metrics and dashboards to present financial information to various stakeholders.
- Prepares or directs periodic and ad hoc financial analyses and reports.
- Conducts or directs in-depth financial analyses to identify trends, variance commentary, and potential risks or recommendations.
- Develop what-if scenarios and sensitivity analysis.
- Maintain budget planning models in Anaplan
- Provide Board and Senior Leadership support as needed
- Support or lead special projects and assignments as assigned
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field (Master’s preferred)
- Minimum 5 years of experience in finance, accounting, or a related role, with a preference for experience in higher education
- Strong knowledge of financial principles, budgeting, financial analysis, and accounting standards
- Proficiency with financial software systems (e.g., Banner, PeopleSoft, or similar platforms) and MS Excel; SQL and Cognos experience a plus
- Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- Knowledge of higher education financial regulations, funding sources, and reporting requirements is preferred
