Job Summary

Veterinary Assistant

Reporting structure: The assistant works under the supervision of the veterinary practice manager, who will indicate general assignments, limitations, and priorities. Recurring assignments are performed independently. Deviations of unfamiliar situations are referred to the supervisor. Completed work is reviewed for technical accuracy and compliance with established procedures.

Assistant objectives: The purpose of this position is to serve as a assistant at LaGrange Veterinary Clinic, to perform clerical duties related to patient care and treatment, and to provide miscellaneous support of the veterinary practice management and health care team. These functions include, but are not limited to, reception (visitor and telephone), accounts maintenance, cash processing, data entry and mail service. Assisting DVM's and technicians in exam rooms. This position requires a practical knowledge of standard procedures, veterinary records and terminology used in the hospital. Regular attendance and timeliness are essential in order to fulfill the requirements of the position.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Veterinary experience preferred

Essential Functions:

Clerical

  • Schedule appointments, obtaining all necessary data concerning the patient and owner. Prepare all required forms in advance when possible.
  • Prepare to receive appointments. Preparing needed forms in advance of client arrival. Complete required forms such as new client forms, consent forms, estimates and obtain necessary information.
  • Assure that all financial obligations are met by owners. Collect client fees, process credit card and cash transactions.
  • Performing a variety of clerical duties, receiving, sorting, distributing mail, sending out mail, cleaning and organizing reception area.
  • Assisting with patients in exam rooms.
  • Caring for patients in the clinic.
  • Ensuring the cleanliness and organization in the clinic.
  • Open and close procedures.

Customer and Personal Service

  • Provide friendly, quality client care to the patients and clients of LaGrange Veterinary Clinic.
  • Professionally handle all calls – answering client inquires in a prompt and friendly manner, scheduling appointments, record messages.
  • Requires strong communication and client service skills.
  • Receive incoming calls, screen those that are handled by other team members.
  • Check clients in – greet clients in a professional, friendly manner.

Veterinary Polices/Procedures

  • Follow established hospital procedures for recommendations and treatment for pets.
  • Perform over-the-counter sales of products available for our patients. Explain these products and answer questions about the products.
  • Fill veterinary prescriptions with appropriate medication; provide routine instructions to owners concerning prescriptions for medications.
  • Collect lab specimens from pet owners for the veterinary technicians.
  • Processing lab samples obtained in appointments.

Computer

  • Entering data into the computer system, retrieving computerized records. Becoming competent with the Avimark computer program.
  • Knowledge of computers and relevant software applications including MS Word.
  • Completing medical records for patients you assist with.

Physical Demands

  • Standing, walking, and using hands and fingers are essential to perform the skills of this job. Being able to stoop, kneel or crouch may also be required.
  • Lifting may be required up to 40 lbs without assistance.

Pay: $12.00 - $14.00 per hour
