Job Description:

Position Summary:

  • Put patients first, establishing the expectation that quality patient care outcomes are the highest priority for all services and processes.

  • Collaborate with Patient Relations Management, Quality Management and Risk Management as appropriate to resolve complaints and deficiencies. 

  • Affirm LHMC’s Guiding Principles of Respect, Caring, Teamwork, Excellence and Purpose through personal example and by celebrating these principles when observed in action. 

Organizational, Financial and Leadership Duties. 

  • Articulate an aspirational vision for the division that is aligned with future of Gastroenterology nationally as well as institutional strategic plans and goals with a priority toward sustained growth. 

  • In partnership with the Vice President/Executive Director, develop and implement operating and capital budgets for the division.   

  • Identify key performance measures for the division based on strategic objectives. 

  • Evaluate performance and provide regular feedback to ensure that targets are achieved, including patient access, volumes, demand, patient satisfaction, patient outcomes, provider productivity, and financial outcomes.  

  • Assess colleague satisfaction; encourage conditions that foster satisfaction and promote changes for improvement when dissatisfaction is indicated. 

  • Foster a continuous productive dialogue between hospital leaders and faculty, providers, community partners, academic partners, students and trainees at all levels. 

  • Ensure that the work environment is free from sexual harassment and discrimination for reasons of race, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation, veteran’s status, or mental or physical disability consistent with the policies developed by LHMC. 

 

Patient care and professional practice. 

  • Demonstrate clinical mastery in the specialty of Gastroenterology.   

  • Promote and facilitate the advancement of medical knowledge to enhance clinical practice within the division and across other divisions within LHMC.    

  • Ensure that all LHMC, regulatory, and accreditation standards and policies are clearly communicated and that each member of the division fully complies as applicable to their role. 

  • Conduct performance appraisals at least annually; conduct ongoing professional practice evaluations (OPPE) and focused professional practice evaluations (FPPE) when appropriate, and create individualized developmental plans for medical staff to sustain performance excellence. 

  • Make recommendations to the Department of Medicine Chair and the Credentials Committee concerning staff rank, classification, appointment, reappointment and delineation of clinical privileges for all applicants or practitioners within the medical discipline for the Lahey network.  

  • Recommend corrective action to the DOM Chair as part of the disciplinary proceedings for a division or section medical staff member according to the appropriate medical staff by-laws. 

Academic Activities and Professional Development. 

  • Lead in education innovation and next generation training to address emerging healthcare needs of our diverse populations. 

  • Support the division’s research and education activities and ensure that such activities are aligned with strategic objectives of improving health care quality, safety and value. 

  • Supports environment for successful training of staff, residents, fellows and students. 

  • Effectively mentor division members in pursuit of scholarly activities and professional growth. 

Reporting Relationships:

Reports to: Chair, Department of Medicine 

 

Supervises: Medical staff (physicians and advanced practice professionals) and all other members of the Division of Gastroenterology 

 

Relates to: Executive Director for the Division of Gastroenterology  

Nurse Manager and Associate Chief Nurse for GI and Endoscopy Services 
Chief Medical Officer, Chief Academic Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Quality Officer and Patient Safety Officer, Other Division and Department Chairs, Fellowship and Residency Program Directors /Associate Program Directors 
 

Required Qualifications 

Education 

  • Board Certified in Gastroenterology  

  • Eligibility for or current licensure in Massachusetts 

  • Background consistent with appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor 

  • Additional business and leadership training is desirable  

 

Experience 

  • At least 10 years of experience as a practicing gastroenterologist 

  • Leadership experience in a collaborative clinical group practice 

  • Track record in change management, innovation and team building 

  • Experience working with advanced practice provider colleagues
