What are the responsibilities and job description for the Heavy Equipment Operator (Dredge Operator) position at Lake Caroline POA?
General Purpose of Position:
Operates and maintains heavy equipment to remove silt and debris that accumulates in shallow coves and shorelines from runoff in order to facilitate and improve navigability, recreational use, and overall lake environmental health.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Primary:
- Operates amphibious excavator, tender barge, and grapple truck.
- Operates and maintains dredge spoils and disposal site.
- Performs needed preventive maintenance on equipment and vehicles.
- Adheres strictly to safety rules, regulations and safe work practices.
- Maintains records and detailed logs.
Secondary:
- Operates front end loader, backhoe, dump trucks, tractors, bush hogs,finish mowers, chippers, and other motorized equipment.
- Operates snow-plows and performs snow removal operations.
- Performs roadside vegetation control, drainage maintenance and pavement maintenance and repair.
- Performs related work as directed.
Required Education and Certifications:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license with no traffic citations within the previous 3 years.
- CDL-A with air brakes license (required!)
- Ability to obtain Coast Guard approved, Virginia Boater Safety Education Course.
Experience:
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently with minimal supervision.
- Significant experience in the operation of various types of construction and road maintenance equipment.
- General knowledge of the operating capabilities and characteristics of all equipment utilized.
- Skill in the performance of operator and preventive maintenance.
- Knowledge of traffic laws/regulations governing equipment operation.
- Knowledge of safety precautions and requirements for safe operation of construction equipment.

- Ability to take ownership and be dedicated to the sustained success of lake dredging operations.
- Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.

Work Environment:
- Primarily outdoors, typically sitting, reaching, gripping, walking, bending,stooping, kneeling, climbing, crawling, and standing; some lifting and carrying objects weighing 50 or more pounds; frequent equipment moving.
- Regular exposure to noise, heat, cold, dust, dirt, gases, grease, cleaning agents,low and high voltage. Danger from cuts, scrapes, bruises, falls, burns.
- Work hours are a standard 40 per week, between the hours of 7:00am – 3:30pm, although overtime may be required. Timeliness and adherence to posted arrival/work start times and break times are strictly enforced.
