SURGICAL TECHNICIAN- Full Time
Department: LCMH for Women-Surgery Location: Lake Charles, LADESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
- Provides technical care for patients within assigned unit of hospital in support of medical care as directed by medical staff and pursuant to objectives and policies of the hospital, the Surgical Technician is responsible for delegated care for all patients assigned to him/her by the RN.
SUPERVISION: Reports directly to Nurse Manager and/or Charge Nurse
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Utilizes unit specific equipment safely and appropriately (Autoclave, microscopes, etc.).
- Following surgical procedure, readies surgical suite and properly disposes of instruments.
- Is knowledgeable of procedures and prepares for potential emergencies by assuring equipment and instrumentation is available.
- Actively participates in Universal Protocol practices as appropriate.
- Communicates clearly and appropriately with other surgical team members (circulator/physician)
- Handles and labels specimens according to policy.
- Performs surgical counts accurately (when applicable).
- Utilizes universal precautions including protective eye-wear.
- Accurately gathers appropriate instruments and supplies for all assigned cases.
- Utilizes principles of aseptic technique and maintains sterile conscience.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
- High School graduate or GED equivalent.
- Certification encouraged.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
- Work requires a variety of physical activities, including moving about within and outside of all hospital properties for long periods of time.
- Must be able to respond quickly and effectively to emergency and non-emergent situations.
- May be required to assist in controlling disorderly conduct or combative patients.
- Must be able to exchange accurate information with patient, family, peers and medical personnel.
