What are the responsibilities and job description for the Laborer - Seed Nursery position at Lake County Forest Preserve District?
SUMMARY
The Laborer – Seed Nursery position assists in the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the native seed nursery, greenhouse, and seed-processing center. Responsibilities include propagation from seed and vegetative reproduction, transplanting seedlings, general plant care comprising fertilizing, watering, pest control, and operating greenhouse climate controls. Maintains the nursery beds through planting, weeding, and watering. May work with volunteers, YCC Crew Members or contractors. Operates field equipment including weed whips and seed harvesters, and applies pesticides. Assists with planting projects at various District sites. Participates in seed collection, seed processing, and proper storage of all seed. Drives a motorized vehicle to travel to different locations. Performs tasks that will require walking, bending, stooping, standing, kneeling, climbing, reaching and sitting. Performs heavy lifting tasks up to 50 pounds.
EXPERIENCE
Two years of college level coursework in horticulture, botany or natural resource related fields. Experience with seed collection. Basic knowledge of motorized equipment (i.e. tractor, weed whips, power augers, and other pieces of motorized equipment) and vehicles. Basic knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions pertaining to nursery operations. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Upon hire, must obtain an Illinois Pesticide Operators License.
