Reports To: Get Outdoors Leadville! Out-of-School-Time Programs Manager
Schedule: Monday - Friday, approx. 7:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., with occasional work opportunities or requirements beyond this schedule for special events

(GOL!) is a grant-funded initiative of the PROS department working to expand equitable access to culturally informed and enriching outdoor experiences in Lake County. Position Summary

Get Outdoors Leadville! seeks an Assistant Camp Director for Rockies Rock Adventure Camp. This position works with the OOST Programs Manager and the Outreach and Enrollment Coordinator to help manage and oversee the daily delivery of safe, inclusive, and high-quality outdoor day camp programming. The Assistant Camp Director will be called upon for camp leadership duties, to handle camp logistics and equipment, and to act as a hiking or biking leader when needed. Suitable candidates will have a strong background in outdoor leadership, team-building, personnel management, and logistical support.

This is a seasonal position, running from May through August 2025.

General Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Help oversee day-to-day programming operations of Rockies Rock Adventure Camp, including logistics, program design, summer food service program delivery, and 4 weeks of program implementation.
  • Act as logistics point-person for all camp needs, including but not limited to transport (acting as afternoon bus-boss), food management and delivery, and program implementation
  • Exhibit core values of cultural awareness, inclusivity, compassion, integrity, healthy lifestyle choices, respect for others and the environment, and collaboration.
  • Act as adventure leader when needed, leading biking and hiking outings
  • Act as a substitute Crew Leader when needed
  • Coordinate with the GOL! Gear Library on correct check-out and check-in of gear and supplies
  • Plan and lead All-Camp activities in partnership with Crew Leaders and Camp Director
  • Help transport gear to and from sites as needed, including archery equipment
  • Collaborate with and advise OOST Programs Manager in camp protocols, systems, and practices
  • Help create and sustain a positive, collaborative team atmosphere among camp staff
  • Ensure adherence to established administrative systems and camp protocols
  • Work in partnership with OOST Programs Manager to plan and deliver training of staff
  • Assist OOST Programs Manager and staff in emergencies, incidents, or behavior support
  • Mentor Crew Leaders through interpersonal challenges within co-leaders
  • Respond to behavior intervention requests with campers
  • Occasionally drive self and camp participants in program vehicles
  • Maintain a tidy, organized workspace and care for equipment used during programming
  • Attend all administrative meetings
  • Adhere to County Employee Handbook, GOL! guiding resources, including the Rockies Rock Staff Manual, and professionalism standards
  • Uphold Mandatory Reporting requirements and other applicable Childcare License expectations
  • Requires frequent in-county travel, and may require infrequent in-state travel. Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado Driver’s License and the appropriate level of personal vehicle insurance.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise, mentor, and coach two Adventure Leaders (one hiking and one biking)
  • Assist Camp Director in supervising, mentoring, and coaching up to 20 crew leaders, and 10 Assistant Crew Leaders

Notice of Emergency/Disaster Responsibilities
All Lake County Employees may be required to work as a Disaster Service Worker when a local declaration of emergency or disaster is declared by the Board of County Commissioners. To be prepared for this role, all employees and emergency service function (ESF) leads will attend emergency management trainings and exercises as requested by the Director of Emergency Management. With advanced notification from OEM, employees will make reasonable efforts to attend training events in coordination with other employees and supervisors.

Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age
  • Experience with operational management and team leadership
  • Experience with outdoor curriculum, outdoor program delivery, risk management protocols, and/or other translatable skills or experience
  • Knowledge of Leave No Trace practices
  • Sense of humor, resourcefulness, creativity, and passion for connecting youth to the outdoors to inspire a lifelong love of nature
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Suite and Google Drive
  • Current First Aid and CPR Certifications through American Red Cross or equivalent
  • Current Wilderness First Aid Certification
  • Completion of health history
  • Clearance of federal and state criminal background checks
  • Satisfactory driving record and current driver’s license
  • Proficiency in English and Spanish preferred
  • Preferred knowledge of, and existing relationships within a diverse cross-section of the Lake County community
  • Position requires some flexibility of work hours, including occasional events/activities in the evenings and on weekends.

Hazard Notice
This position’s duties are performed mostly outdoors, with some administrative and staff leadership work in an indoor environment. The incumbent may be exposed to some noise (electrical, mechanical or human) on an occasional basis, and other related hazards associated with an outdoor environment. Physical hazards may include weather-related hazards, extreme heat, extreme cold, noise, and sun/UV exposure. Exposure to natural, biologic hazards such as insects and injurious plants is also possible.

Physical Activity & Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear for extended periods of time. The employee will be required to use a computer to accomplish administrative tasks. The employee is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. Must have the ability to safely restrain and physically support children when needed for safety in general camp activities (child weighing 40 - 200 pounds). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and vision sufficient for driving. The employee will also be required to walk (hike) in uneven, mountainous terrain on and off trail for up to 10 miles, and 2,000 vertical feet and bike on single-track bike trails for up to 15 miles and 3,000 vertical feet at altitudes of >10,000’ MSL.
