The Custodian general function will be to perform custodial care and cleaning of public buildings and equipment. Work involves the performance of cleaning and routine maintenance as assigned. They will be responsible for using proper methods, materials and equipment in cleaning and otherwise attending to the neatness and sanitation of buildings and equipment. This position will work Monday through Friday from 5:00pm -1:30am and requires medium work involving standing or walking all of the time, exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular basis.
Essential Functions
Depending on the assignment, the incumbent may perform a combination of some or all of the following duties, and perform related duties as assigned:
- Provide maintenance in areas such as basic, plumbing, painting, roof repair, carpentry, water main repair and installation; related to maintenance involving the repair of buildings and equipment.
- Receive and perform tasks from work orders; input new and completed work orders into the appropriate computer system.
- Receive work assignments and orders from Maintenance Supervisors, ensuring assignments are completed on time.
- Check public restrooms to ensure they are stocked and clean.
- Clean up spills in public areas.
- Ensure the entire complex is maintained including picking up litter around the complex; cleaning the parking lots; and cleaning sidewalks.
- Maintain parking areas; ensure proper function of entrance, nesting and exit gate arms; empty and replenish ticket dispenser; and traffic control.
- Operate and maintain heavy/medium equipment such as tool cat, bob cat, pick up truck, electric lawn mower, etc.; inspect safety of all equipment, machinery and tools.
- Perform snow removal in the winter months; assist in the maintenance of grounds.
- Maintain stock levels of expendables and assure availability of special tools.
- Drive a county or personal vehicle.
- All other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge Skills Abilities and Education Required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in the maintenance of facilities and equipment.
- Skill in problem-solving and conflict resolution.
- Skill in time management and attention to detail.
- Ability to operate power scrubbers and sweepers.
- Ability to work from oral or written instructions.
- Ability to successfully use County-specific technology and general office software.
- Ability to effectively communicate in writing and orally on job progress in overall assignments and responsibilities.
- Ability to communicate clearly and logically both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to use tools, or equipment requiring basic instruction and experience such as tools and computers.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with organization managers and staff, the public and others encountered in the course of work.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- One (1) year of experience in custodial work
- Valid driver’s license or State Identification
- Or any combination of work experience that provides the candidates possesses the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties prescribed to the position (above).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires work involving standing or walking some of the time, exerting up to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurrent basis. Must be able to climb ladders and stairs, work standing for long periods of time, work in extreme environments.
May be exposed to bright/dim lights, dust and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, animals/wildlife, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights.
The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision and the ability to hear and speak to understand, respond to and build relationships with a diverse clientele. Color, depth and texture perception.
