General Description
The Public Health Nurse is a valuable member of our STI program team who is responsible for the provision of nursing services to ambulatory primary care clients. Provides professional nursing care according to physicians' orders in conformance with recognized nursing techniques and procedures, established standards and administrative policies. Maintains clinical charts including documentation of laboratory test results, medication and treatment. Provides clients with laboratory test results and explanations, when applicable. Provides basic health education and referral services to clients as needed. Assists physician with client care; gives injections and medication, as instructed. Responsible for maintenance of general neatness and orderliness in clinic. Attends in service education, staff meetings and workshops that are appropriate for professional development.

Essential Functions
- Provides professional nursing care according to physicians’ orders in conformance with recognized nursing techniques and procedures, established standards and administrative policies.
- Maintains electronic clinical charts including documentation of laboratory test results, medications and treatment.
- Provides clients with laboratory test results and explanations, when applicable.
- Provides basic health education and referral services to clients as needed.
- Assists physician with client care; gives injections and medication, as instructed.
- Responsible for maintenance of general neatness and orderliness in clinic.
- Provides direct HIV pre-test and post-test education in compliance with grant requirements.
- Provides treatment for STIs following the appropriate standing orders.
- Oversees all STI treatments done in the field or clinic setting by signing off on all medications dispensed by STI program counselors.
- Responsible for STI surveillance activities in Lake County.
- Inventories STI medications and insures appropriate amounts are on hand for all STI treatments.
- Maintains accountability and ordering of medications to treat STIs.
- Maintains Standard Operating Procedures and Policies related to the STI surveillance and treatment.
- Attends in service education, staff meetings and workshops that are appropriate for professional development.
- Provides safer sex and preconceptual education to clients.
- Conduct outreach to community providers, providing STI surveillance and treatment education and updates.
- Provide surge support for Communicable Disease (CD) Program.
Knowledge Skills Abilities and Education Required
- Requires a Bachelor's degree in nursing, an Associate's degree in nursing, or graduation from a diploma school of nursing.
- One year of direct patient care experience is preferred.
- Illinois licensure as a registered professional nurse or Illinois licensure by reciprocity within six months of the initial date of employment.
- Requires successful completion of IDPH sexually transmitted infection and HIV certification courses within a year from hire date.
