What are the responsibilities and job description for the Dispatcher 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator position at Lake County Sheriff's Office - Florida?
JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for operating communications equipment, receiving calls from the general public and dispatching and communicating with deputies. Dispatcher starting pay is $21.00 per hour with a $1.00 an hour increase upon successful completion of training.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Answer calls routed to the Lake County Sheriff Office and 911.
- Input the teletypes and BOLO's.
- Operate radio to dispatch appropriate personnel to location assistance is required.
- Monitor inter-city calls to see if assistance is needed from other agencies.
- Receive and process requests for records history on driver's licenses and license plate tags, and communicates information to Deputies.
- Process information requests through teletype relating to ownership, status and filed liens on vehicles. Process other requests as directed.
- Access police records and criminal histories. Process original histories as requested.
- Establish radio patches between Deputies and citizens, CIB, SIB, and their Sergeants and Lieutenants, or other LCSO personnel as requested.
- Respond to calls from complainants and direct calls as appropriate or through Chain of Command.
- Assist Training Dispatcher in training new dispatchers.
- Notify personnel when needed to respond to calls.
- Notify Senior Management of situations.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Pull warrants, injunctions, and paperwork.
- Complete administrative duties including faxing requested documents to specified agencies.
- Assist co-workers as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS
EXTERNAL and INTERNAL RELATIONSHIP and COMMUNICATION REQUISITE
- State Attorneys Office and State Probation Department
- State and local Police and Fire Departments
- General public to include private citizens, businesses and governmental and municipal entities.
- FHP, EMS, DCF, Court System and other agencies outside of Florida
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES and REGISTRATIONS
- Must possess a valid Florida driver's license
- Must possess and maintain CJIS certification
- Must possess and maintain 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator state certification (effective Oct 1, 2012)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES
- Must be able to comprehend and communicate fluently in verbal and written English.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak clearly and effectively.
- Must be able to learn to communicate using approved radio signals and codes.
- Must be able to handle high volumes of radio traffic that results in emergency situations.
- Must have working knowledge of geographic areas of Lake County and surrounding jurisdictions.
- Must have strong computer skills to include working knowledge of law enforcement programs.
- Must have the ability make decisions and remain calm under stressful conditions within time constraints.
- Must type at an acceptable speed as required for position.
- Must have the ability to follow directives as given by supervisors.
- Must have vision sufficient to read computer screen data. Normal vision range; see color differentiation as necessary to distinguish color variations on maps, computer screens and radio consoles.
- Far Vision Ability: Clarity of vision at or exceeding 20 feet.
- Near Vision Ability: Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.
- Mid-Range Vision Ability: Clarity of vision at distances more than 20 inches and less than 20 feet.
- Depth Perception Ability: Ability to judge distances, dimensions, and spatial relationships in order to see objects/persons as and where they are in relation to foreground/background objects and space.
- Visual Focus Ability: Ability to adjust to the lens of the eye(s) to bring objects into clear and sharp focus from varying distances.
- Color Vision Ability: Ability to see, identify, and distinguish colors.
- Field of Vision Ability: Ability to observe an area's horizontal and vertical fields while eyes are fixed on a given point.
- Hearing Ability: Ability to perceive, isolate, extract, analyze, identify, locate source and comprehend sound and voices within a wide decibel range, from whispers to loud noises. Ability to isolate and distinguish critical sounds/noise/oral communications from background noises. This is a critical ability with regards to officer safety requirements.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a standard office setting. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high. Depending on assignment, the employee may be required to work long and/or irregular work hours, including evenings and/or weekends.
