Certified Medical Assistant - Primary Care/OPMH

The Certified Medical Assistant is a valuable member of our Primary Care/Outpatient Mental Health team who under general supervision, assists providers and staff members in providing optimal ambulatory health care to patients, stocks and maintains exam and team rooms; and assists with clinical and clerical duties. Work involves direct patient contact and is performed in accordance with prescribed methods, techniques, and procedures. Assists patients in applying for patient assistant programs and monitors expiration of programs, assessments, and medications. Performs phone outreach to patients to set appointments and respond to questions. Cross-trained to work with psychiatric and medical teams in a medical assistant role, doing both on a weekly basis. Meets with pharmaceutical drug reps as needed. Performs phlebotomy and point-of-care testing.

Schedule: 37.5 hours a week
  • Monday/Wednesday/Friday 8am - 4pm
  • Tuesday 12pm - 8pm
  • Thursday 10am - 6pm
  • Checks patients’ medical records for pertinent data.
  • Greets and escorts patients to exam rooms; prepares for the provider by obtaining initial information and vital signs (temperature, pulse, blood pressure and respiration, height, weight, BMI, and head circumference as specified by program).
  • Documents chief complaints of patients and notifies the nurse/provider of unusual symptoms or complaints.
  • Assists in telephone follow-up with the patient as directed by the program.
  • Under the direction of the provider and/or nurse, assist with basic patient health education.
  • Inspects exam rooms for cleanliness and equipment condition.
  • Maintains ordered supplies and keeps the area stocked. Checks for medical supplies that are outdated.
  • Performs tasks including filing, chart documentation, and telephone follow-up as assigned.
  • Performs peak flow; spirometry; EKG; application of Non-Stress Test (NST) belts; point of care testing and phlebotomy services as directed.
  • Administer medication within their scope of practice.
  • Manages upcoming due dates for each individual client and completes paperwork for treatment plans, completes Kessler outcome measures, etc, and informs provider when completed and needing reviews/signatures
  • Performs and documents patient outreach for ‘Just In Time’ psychiatric scheduling for client appointments and follow-up with medications/questions
  • Cross-trained in psychiatric and medical CMA duties, attending trainings and roll-outs for both medical and psychiatric changes. Accurately performs current workflows and supports both psychiatric and medical teams and providers on a weekly basis.
  • Manages psych medication closet and inventory including: new stock, expirations, data input and monthly reconciliation
  • Maintains certificate in and performs phlebotomy
  • Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of clinic and work area.
Medical assistant certification or registration is required. (Must be certified by one of the certifying bodies below)
  1. The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) - CMA
  2. The Association of Medical Technologists (AMT) - RMA
  3. The National Healthcareer Association (NHA) - CCMA
  4. National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) – NCMA
  5. American Allied Health (AAH) - RMA

  • Requires High School Diploma or GED.
  • One year of experience preferred.
  • Successful completion of LCHD/CHC competencies within 6 months of hire.
  • Ability to work on weekends, holidays and overtime if necessary.
  • Ability to travel to multiple LCHD/CHC locations on a regular basis.
  • Ability to maintain and keep records.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos
  • Some knowledge of spelling, punctuation and grammar.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of computers and electronic health records experience is preferable.
  • Ability to operate various office and medical equipment.
  • Candidates who have completed a 160-hour externship with the LCHD/CHC will have the one-year experience requirement waived
