Peer Support Specialist - Substance Abuse Program

The Peer Support Specialist is a valuable member of our Substance Abuse Program Team who provides support to clients with Co-Occurring Disorders, based on their own experiences. Responsible for engaging and motivating the identified population to seek needed services. Explains, guides supports, and assists clients with goals of improved stability and self-sufficiency, independent living, self-advocacy, and development of supportive relationships. The Peer Support Specialist will serve as a role model, mentor, advocate, and motivator to recovering individuals in order to help prevent relapse and promote long-term recovery. 

To be successful in this role, we are looking for someone who is
  • Compassionate and Patient 
  • Understand drug/alcohol addiction
  • Empathetic with lived experience
Schedule: 37.5 hours a week
  • Monday-Friday (8:am-4:30pm)
  • Assist recovering persons to identify their personal interests, goals, strengths, and weaknesses regarding recovery.
  • Accompany clients to medical appointments, court appointments, DCFS meetings, 12-step meetings, and other activities that are supportive of their recovery.
  • Educate community institutions or state agencies and social services staff regarding the screening and referral of at-risk individuals to treatment. 
  • Provides community intervention which includes crisis intervention, and case finding to identify individuals in need of service including in-reach and outreach to targeted populations or individuals not admitted to treatment.
  • Assist potential clients through the intake process, referrals, and connection with LCHD services as well as outside services. 
  • A high school diploma, G.E.D. certificate required. 
  • Certified Recovery Support Specialist (CRSS) required, or obtained within 12 months of hire. 
  • Requires one year of direct and personal experience with the mental health system as a primary consumer of services.
  • Requires valid driver’s license and insurance.

Currently, you must reside in Illinois or Wisconsin to work for the Lake County Health Department. Any offer of employment is conditioned on the successful completion of a background screening, drug and alcohol testing and may include a pre-employment medical exam.
