A 911 telecommunicator must respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance and information.  They must provide dispatch and communication support services for law enforcement, fire, emergency, and related services. This position is under supervision.

  • Operate a multi-line telephone console system, alerting system, and TDD system for the deaf and hearing -impaired
  • Determine and assign the level of priority of the call and enter the data into a computer-aided dispatch system
  • Ask vital questions and provide pre-arrival instructions for law enforcement and emergency services. 
  • Monitor transmissions as required. 
  • Filing duties as required on shift 
  • Receive and transmit messages to radio mobile units. 
  • Enter and retrieve information from the computer terminal 
  • Receive and respond to a variety of emergency and non-emergency services and complaints 
  • Ask questions to interpret, analyze and anticipate the caller's situation as to resolve problems, provide information to responding units, dispatch additional emergency services, or refer callers to other agencies. 
  • Enter and modify information into local, state, and national computer databases.
  • All other related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of rules and regulations, policy and procedures, including safety, such as CPR and first aid. 
  • Knowledge of telecommunications systems, which may include transmission, broadcasting, and switching systems, and computerized databases, including teletype operations and procedures. 
  • Basic dispatch codes, as well as standard abbreviations and terminology commonly used by emergency medical services and law enforcement agencies. 
  • Understand jurisdictional boundaries as well as thoroughfares, landmarks, public buildings, and waterways within Lake County.   
  • The ability to develop and maintain cooperative and professional relationships with fellow employees, representatives from other divisions, and supervisors. 
  • The ability to use logic and reasoning to reach conclusions and approach problems. 
  • The ability to use judgment and sound decision-making skills to evaluate situations, establish priorities, and resolve matters. 
  • The ability to think quickly. 
  • The ability to work under stressful conditions. 
  • The ability to actively listen and communicate effectively through clear speech and hearing. 
  • The ability to follow instructions. 
  • The ability to write clearly and spell correctly. 
  • The ability to establish priorities and pass on information as it comes in.
  • The ability to prove excellent customer service.

Education and/or Other Requirements:

  • Requires completion of a standard high school diploma program or equivalent.
  • Must meet all State qualifications.
  • Must pass and maintain all certifications required including but not limited to, LEADS full access, Hazmat, and TDD. 
  • Ability to type a minimum of 30 words per minute. (total WPM with errors subtracted) 
  • Requires knowledge of  Federal Communications Commission Rules and Regulations; 10-code operating signals; federal, state, county and city laws or ordinances; radio transmitter equipment and frequency controls; practices governing the operation of a central communications facility; and phonetic alphabet and 11 codes.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • This is a 24/7 work environment. This position requires availability to work weekends, holidays, and all shifts as required. Overtime may be required. Shift selection is done by seniority shift bidding.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires light to medium work involving standing or walking some of the time. 
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force on a regular basis. 
  • Moderate dexterity in operating machinery, tools, or office equipment. 
  • The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, and speaking abilities.
