JOB SUMMARY : The Assistant Dean of Preclinical Education is administratively responsible for Year I and Year II of the curriculum as well as those components of didactic education that occur in Year III and IV. Oversees and directs academic, administrative, accreditation and financial functions for the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) Bradenton Campus program. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring recommendations, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance including recognition of employee contributions and taking disciplinary action as appropriate; addressing complaints and resolving problems; and ensuring the development, implementation, scheduling and assessment of the preclinical curriculum.

CHARACTERISTIC JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Under the leadership of the Dean, and in cooperation with other faculty, be responsible for the entire Year I and Year II preclinical education program as well as those components of didactic education that occur in Year III and Year IV;

Supervises, counsels, advises and evaluates COM faculty members in meeting their responsibilities;

Establishes preclinical goals, objectives and outcome measures to assess student, staff and faculty and performance;

Supervises and provides assessment for COM Pre-Clinical Staff

Serves as ex-officio member of the SPG and Curriculum Committees and the Admissions Committee at the appointment of the President

Reviews current literature in order to recommend implementation of new and innovative curricular programs to the Dean and Provost, in order to assure that LECOM maintains a “cutting edge” educational program;

Oversees the faculty and staff evaluation and assessment process;

Works with the Provost and the other Deans to direct the entire LECOM Bradenton program;

Helps lead the faculty in the design and definition of the preclinical curriculum and in the development of educational policy consistent with the mission of the Institution;

Responsible for preclinical education student guidance, mentoring, and counseling;

Prepares and administers the budget for the entire preclinical education area;

Develops and initiates faculty development, in-service and leadership training;

Assigns faculty advisors

Recommends prospective adjunct preclinical faculty to the Dean;

Oversees and directs preclinical course and program assessment;

Responsible for knowledge of all AOA, AACOM and MSCHE requirements for accreditation, taking leadership in preparing accreditation reports;

Teaches and facilitates as requested by the Dean, serving as a back-up facilitator for PBL group sessions;

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the policies and applicable laws;

Creates PowerPoint presentations and delivers lectures concerning preclinical education and other educational programs on an as needed basis;

Serves as a faculty mentor for students in a variety of related issues (i.e. Struggling Students…Etc.);

Assumes advisor roles for repeating students

Participates in educational related research either as a principle investigator or student mentor as needed;

Provides consultation services to other faculty members in regards to preclinical education;

Periodically reviews the preclinical education program and offers suggestions for improvement;

Serves on various committees as assigned;

Contributes toward specific projects and functions related to the COM;

Tracks student attendance and provides attendance reports;

Prepares quarterly reports for presentation to the Board by the Dean

Assesses student outcomes for predictive patterns for student performance;

Makes sure all post-course evaluations are completed by students and tracked accordingly;

Faculty member will contribute and be responsible for overall student success, including, but not limited to, advising and student outcomes;

Faculty member will contribute directly to the Mission of LECOM embodying the essence of Osteopathic Principles and Practices by assisting with Institutional fundraising and participating in the LECOM Scholarship Auction;

Faculty member will participate in scholarly activity so to enrich and broaden the student learning experience;

Faculty member will commit to being a representative of LECOM by being actively involved in the community, including, but not limited to, serving on Boards, participating in community fundraisers and overall outreach;

Must be able to take direction and receive assignments from the Dean or his / her designee; and

Accept other duties needed / assigned for the Institution’s needs.

Minimum Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS : Must possess required knowledge and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

Strong leadership skills with experience with strategic planning, systems improvement, budgets, effective management, and a background in health policy;

Knowledge of preclinical education concepts necessary to ensure a proper understanding for students including problem based learning curriculum;

Demonstrates an ability to effectively lead faculty and staff in the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the institution.

Understanding of osteopathic principles and practices;

Compliance with State and Federal Regulations and Safety Protocols, at the practice level.

Knowledge of patient’s (“HIPAA”) and student’s (“FERPA”) privacy;

Follow proper OSHA and safety guidelines;

Strong communications skills are essential as well as computer literacy (MS Office Suit [i.e. Word, PowerPoint and Excel]) and accurate data entry skills;

Excellent organizational skills;

Must be accurate and attentive to detail;

Must be trained and certified on the Institutional Data System;

Maintaining an established work schedule for self, faculty and staff with adherence to the faculty handbook for on campus requirements;

Effectively using interpersonal and communications skills, including tact, diplomacy and adherence to professionalism and respect;

Effectively using organizational and planning skills, including attention to detail and follow-through;

Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects, and demands;

Maintaining confidentiality of work related information and materials;

Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships;

Travel including overnight travel is required;

Be able to be flexible to accept other duties needed / assigned for the COM needs;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : Education and experience equivalent to : a terminal degree (D.O., M.D., or Ph.D.). A minimum of five (5) years of experience in academic administration and / or medical education at the level of Associate Dean, Assistant Dean, Department Chair, Course Director, Director of Medical Education, and / or Residency Program Director is required.
