Lake Forest Country Day School is seeking a Middle School Social Studies teacher for the upcoming 2025-26 school year. The current Social Studies curriculum includes a study of American history as well as cultural studies of Africa and the indigenous people of the Americas. Additional content includes units on Chicago and Illinois History, World Geography, Civics, and the Constitution. The department is poised to expand the curricular content to further explore world cultures. There is an intentional focus on skill development, study strategies, Cornell note-taking, and project-based learning. While the curriculum is well established, each teacher has autonomy in choosing best practice methods for instruction.
Position Description
Middle School Social Studies Teacher
Teach four middle school science sections
Engage in regular goal-setting and curricular integration conversations
Establish cohesive, clear classroom management expectations
Model and help students establish routines and strategies to support executive functioning
Communicate regularly with students and parents about academic progress
Member of the Social Studies Department
Engage in dialogue with other members of the faculty to foster a collaborative spirit
Attend regular department meetings
Work collaboratively with the other members of the department on curriculum
development
Plan and revise curriculum as needed
Work as part of the department, ensuring that teamwork, flexibility, and a sense of humor
and creative problem-solving remain important
Member of the faculty
Serve as an academic advisor
Attend regular team meetings
Collaborate with the Head of Upper School to establish professional growth areas of focus
Help to flexibly organize time within the daily schedule
Write narrative progress reports
Articulate regular parent communication
Perform all non-teaching duties assigned by the Head of Upper School
Preferred Qualifications
An ability to broaden student understanding of different cultures around the world
Confidence in presenting historical context in a dynamic, student-centric way
Comfort and experience with technology and its use in the classroom
A master’s degree and previous experience teaching middle school social studies
