*Employee is considered a trainee if hired as an out-of-state lateral officer and will remain a trainee until AZPOST Certification is received.

HIRING INCENTIVES:

Lateral Police Officer Incentives- Up to $11,500 total.

UNIFORMS AND EQUIPMENT:

Officers are supplied with the following uniforms which are dry cleaned at the expense of the department:

One (1) Class A Uniform Shirt

Three (3) Long Sleeve Class B Uniform Shirts

Three (3) Short Sleeve Class B Uniform Shirts

Three (3) pairs of Uniform Pants

Two (2) pairs of shorts with two (2) polo shirts for summer months

One (1) optional outer vest carrier

One (1) uniform jacket

Level III body armor

The following equipment is supplied:

Sig Sauer P320 Pro RXP 9mm with Romeo 1 Pro red dot optic

Patrol Rifle with red dot optic

Body Camera

Taser

Handcuffs, expandable baton, OC spray and full duty belt

Duty bag, including equipment, fingerprint kit

VEHICLES:

The department utilizes Ford Explorer Police Interceptors that are equipped with the following:

Dell mobile data computer

Radar

SPECIAL NOTE:

Requires non-standard or rotating shift work to include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. The incumbent works outdoors and is exposed to extreme temperatures. Must be certified as a Peace Officer in Arizona, or another state or federal agency.

Qualified applicants will receive separate testing notifications via email and must be available to participate on the date/time scheduled; no make-up tests will be given. Testing will consist of the following components:

Physical agility testing: Candidates will be required to complete a 500-yard run, an obstacle course, a chain link fence, a solid fence, and body drag. Candidates are required to successfully finish each component in order to move forward and accumulate a minimum combined score of 384 points.

Writing assignment: Topic to be announced at the successful completion of the physical agility testing. This component will be approximately 45 minutes.

Oral Board Interview: Those who successfully complete the Oral Board Interview will be given a background questionnaire that will be used to complete the background investigation phase of the selection process, which can take several weeks. Upon completion, candidates who are selected to move forward will be contacted at a later date to schedule a polygraph examination.

Arizona POST Certified Officer Applicants

In order to apply as an AZPOST certified lateral Police Officer, candidates must have successfully completed an Arizona POST approved Police Officer Academy and currently possess an active AZPOST Peace Officer Certification. Applicants currently certified by AZPOST will not be required to attend the academy.

Out-of-State Lateral Officer Applicants

Out-of-state lateral Police Officers must have successfully completed a sworn Police Officer Academy and currently possess an active Peace Officer Certification. Out-of-State Lateral Officers may be able to gain AZPOST Certification through the waiver process, and if successfully completed, will not be required to attend the academy. For more information regarding the waiver process, visit the Arizona Peace Officer Standard and Training Board website at http://www.azpost.state.az.us/ . Out-of-state lateral Police Officers will be hired as "Police Officer Trainee" and will remain "Trainee" until AZPOST Peace Officer Certification is received.

Class Description:

The incumbent is responsible for enforcing federal, state, and local laws and ordinances. Duties may include: patrolling assigned areas in a marked patrol car, directing traffic for special events and emergency situations, making a police presence known, enforcing vehicle and traffic laws, conducting accident investigations, detecting and preventing criminal activity, transporting prisoners, taking reports, collecting and preserving evidence, apprehending criminals and offenders, answering and responding to radio calls for assistance, assisting other law enforcement agencies and the fire department, conducting V.I.N. inspections, acting as the jailer, and collecting intelligence information.

Education & Experience:

High School Diploma or General Education Development (G.E.D.), preferably supplemented by coursework in criminal justice, and/or military service experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed below.

Licensing & Training:

Valid Driver's License of the appropriate class.

United States Citizenship.

Ability to pass a background investigation.

National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) training, based on assignment.

Police Officer - AZ State certification as a Police Officer

Police Officer/Trainee - Out-of-State certification as a Police Officer with the ability to obtain AZ State certification through the Waiver Process.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required and are subject to change as needs and job requirements change. Position assignments may vary. Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls from the public while enforcing federal, state and local laws and ordinances; performs crime prevention and police services.

Enforces traffic laws, both civil and criminal; monitors traffic complaint areas.

Conducts follow-up investigations on active cases including tracking down suspects, interviewing witnesses and victims, retrieving surveillance video, dusting for fingerprints, collecting and booking in evidence, etc.

Performs residential and commercial security checks.

Completes necessary paperwork including crime reports, crash reports, field interviews, traffic citations, victim rights forms, witness statements, and vehicle action reports.

Makes arrests and testifies in court.

Provides animal control services as needed or required.

Operates and maintains motor vehicles or other work-related equipment requiring a valid Arizona driver license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Some knowledge of police methods, practices, and procedures; thorough knowledge of the geography of the City and location of important buildings; some knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Police Department.

Skill in using firearms and operating a motor vehicle.

Ability to communicate ideas effectively in both oral and written formats; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear reports; ability to deal courteously, but firmly with the public; ability to analyze situations and to adapt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances; ability to establish and maintain an effective relationship with associates, court personnel, medical personnel, and the general public.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

This work requires the occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel and frequently standing, walking, sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals; work is generally in a quiet location (e.g. library, private offices).

The City reserves the right to consider only the most highly qualified applicants. The succeeding examination processes may be required: training and experience, testing, panel interview, employment eligibility verification (EEV) requirements, personnel evaluation profile (PEP), polygraph test, background investigation and alcohol/drug screening test. Appointment subject to successful background investigation and City paid post-employment medical examination after an offer of employment has been made.

These policies have not been altered by the passage of Proposition 207. The use of recreational marijuana is a violation of the City's Drug Free Workplace Policy. All positions within the City are required to submit to a pre-employment drug test.
